Giant Lizard fy|lyqDv1d20
The ranger's animal empathy appears to work the lizard is just defending it's lair. Tristen can see lizard eggs in the rubble behind the lizard, so it appears not to be protecting the chest more or less protecting it's lair and eggs.1d20-1

[ does he get the sense that it would allow him near the chest enough to drag it out of the room away from the nest?]

Tristen senses the lizard is not going to leave and will defend it's lair/nest. Likely it will not allow anyone to reach the chest without a fight.

==== Hmm, so no chance Tristen could approach to drag the chest out?

Tristen motions the others back and takes out his rope. slowly he unwinds one end and leaves it in the hall beyond the door. Slowly he moves towards the chest. He turns himself slighty sideways to the large lizard, not facing it like an approaching predator might, but as one who meant to pass to one side.
The elf keeps his gaze steady on a space between the creature and the chest, so both are in his view. Slowly, steadily he moves towards the chest. He will pause if at any time the lizard takes a threatening posture or shows agitation at his approach. Once the creature is calm again he will proceed. At no time will he look at or approach the eggs, and will never put himself between the mother and eggs.
Once to the chest, he will tie one emd of the rope to it (through handle, padlock or tightly around it if neither exist). When the rope is tied he will retreat slowly in the same manner. Then the group can try to haul the chest out.
=== He will do his best to move at an angle so he is not approaching the lizard straight

The lizard moves watching the ranger. The lizard is more in the southwest corner and less to the west of the chest. the lizard eyes the ranger and issues a warning opening it's mouth and flicking it's tongue out it sort of makes a hissing like sound warning the ranger he is getting too close.

Tristen stops, waiting and watching patiently and projecting an air of calm.
=== How close is he to the chest at the time of the warning? are there handles on the chest that could be hooked by an object? If the lizard seems to calm after a few moments, he may try to continue onward depending on the answers to the above

You manage to close to within 15 feet of the chest yes it has handles that you might be able to hook with a grappling hook and drag the chest from the room which will most likely get the giant lizard to leave you alone.

[Sorry this keeps dragging out... no pun intended]
Tristen will ask if anyone has a grappling hook. Once provided one he will make an attempt to catch the handle on his side with an underhanded throw so it is hopefully less aggressive seeming. He will speak calm reassurances to the lizard while he does so.
=== lol, fingers crossed

[ since none of the party members appear to have a grappling hook with them]
He will tie a loop in the end of this own 50 foot silk rope and attempt to cast The Loop over only the chest. He will do his best not to agitate the creature, and again speak calm assurances to it.

[OOC: ok so for the calming bit give me a charisma roll and for the looping attempt on the chest give me a dex roll.]

===== Lol. would you accept an unskilled (-2) ranged attack roll against a stationary object since the lasso is technically statted as a weapon?

Tristen succeeds in calming the giant lizard it watches him with interest as he fails to lasso the chest handle on the first attempt. (Very well you have persuaded the DM do an unskilled attack -2 to hit with lasso for the 2nd attempt.)

Encouraged that the Lizard has accepted that he means it no harm, Tristen tries again...
== Lol, thanks. I think the odds were actually better for a simple dex check in this case, but the lasso effect seemed more appropo to me
Base Ranged Thac0 19 (-2 untrained) => 21. so 11+ against AC10 (crosses fingers)
