It's a pleasant spring day. There's a soft breeze and the sun shines brightly but not harshly. Were the circumstances different, this would almost seem like a nice stroll through the grasslands. Unfortunately, the seriousness of the situation hangs overhead like a dark cloud.
=============
(OOC: Can I get a perception check from Caelin and anyone who is scouting with him?)

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 17 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 1 Conditions: None. The path was easily observable from a distance, this close out from Greenest they had trampled the undergrowth flat, and with last night's rain, the trail was thick with drying mud, allowing it to be easily observable. So Caelin was to the side of the track, and ahead of the group by about a hundred feet, moving quietly, and leaving trail markers every hundred feet, a large stone with a smaller stone set against it in the direction of his movement. The think draconic cloak, he had stowed in his pack, the worn grey of his supple, leather breeches, a rough spun cotton tunic beneath the buckled, leather jerkin, a bandolier of knives across his chest, all in deep brown scabbards to keep the blade from reflecting the light. The short sword, too, was kept in it's sheath, though he did carry his shield on his left arm, in the event a wandering patrol came across him suddenly. He had run a handful of mud and dirt through his white hair, to keep it from view. {Out of Character Actions}OOC: As stated, about 100' ahead of the main group, moving slowly, using stealth to remain unobserved, 1d20+8= 11;|wsrnLng1d20+8. And, as requested, a Perception check, 1d20+5= 23;1d20+5. I suppose the perception check was more important, but 11, with a +8, seriously? Dice hate me, lol! 1d20+8·1d20+5

"Caelin should scout ahead, as he has suggested," Eliana says. "And anyone else that can do that, should probably help out. Otherwise, Henry, would you like to take the lead, and I'll rely on your protection?" she says with a teasing smile to the squire.
"Sure, I will gladly be at the front of the main group. It's kind of you to give the enemy such a huge target, Eliana." Henry smiles and beats his own chest, then turns to Benyt "Would you be so kind to take the rearguard, Benyt? I do not want to presume too much, but you seem to me quite the warrior and well suited to defend the group if the enemy attacks from behind."
The squire, javelin in hand and shield strapped to his arm, follows Caelin's markers; now that he's on the road, Henry doesn't talk that much anymore and keeps his eyes peeled on the surroundings - he's not wearing the chainmail coif as to better hear the sounds of the land they're traversing. Unfortunately the heavy armour Henry's wearing isn't well suited for a stroll in the countryside and Henry himself seems a bit clumsy, a couple of times stumbling on a hidden rock or a tree root.

Benyt - Female Human Fighter 2
Strolling the gently rolling green hills of Solamnia with a small band on a dangerous hunt was an interesting experience. Despite being so many hundreds of miles from home, the countryside was cool relief against against half a lifetime oppressed by heat and sand. On the other hand, she had no reason for confidence in her companions and little idea of what to expect in their opposition.
She regards Henry wordlessly, chagrined at his thoughtless trust, and drops back with shield and spear in hand, taking care to step gently and pause frequently to listen to their surroundings.

Caelin scouts off a hundred feet ahead of the others, alone. Henry takes the lead of the main group, with Benyt on the rear, and everyone else between the two. There is little in the way of conversation among the group; even the normally chatty Chantilly is oddly quiet.
The trail continues southeast, along the grassy plainlands, with the Daargard Mountains on the distant horizon. Benyt keeps a close eye out for anyone who might be following or trying to sneak up on them, but all is quiet so far. Eventually, the flat grasslands are replaced with gently rolling hills.
After the party travels about three or four miles, or so, Caelin easily spots the smoke up ahead, a couple more miles further down. It's not very much; probably a simple campfire. The wind shifts toward him, and he gets a whiff of some kind of roasted meat in the air.

Eliana laughs lightly at Henry's little joke in spite of himself. "Well, I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't think you were up for the job," she says. "I would say it is a show of confidence."

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 17 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 1 Conditions: None. Judging the direction of the camp fire, Caelin lightly trotted back towards the main group and when in sight of his companions, held up a fist so they would hold up, and quietly approached. "Campfire ahead, about two miles further down," he stressed the next word, "single camp fire. I'll observe, if it's a smaller group that got separated from the main force, it might be worth the risk to neutralize them, see if we can get some questions answered." He paused, looking at his companions for a consensus before moving back out.

Seeing Caelin return, Henry stops and listens intently to what the white-haired man has to say; he mumbles pensively and looks in the distance trying to see the smoke from the campfire and after a while says "You did good, Caelin. Thanks." then points the javelin south-east "I would advise caution, though. It may be a bait - a small group, easily found, while in the woods a much larger group awaits anyone foolish enough to attack. After we have more informations, we may choose if and how we want to handle them."

Something about the way the man spoke felt as though he was being talked down to. Of course he did good, his companions lives hung in the balance. Then he spoke of the care he should exercise when observing the the source of the smoke. "Not about to march into the middle of camp to ask them about troop strength and destination." A pause, "I'll leave that for the Solamnics and those that aspire to join them." A curt nod to the larger man, "Watch for sign, small stone atop larger means hold, I'll double back with what I've spotted."He turned, crouched low and moved back to the trail leading his companions forward towards the source of the cooking fire, moving cautiously while keeping an eye out for scouting parties, or potential ambush sites. {Out of Character Actions}OOC: Moving back to the lead dropping trail signs every hundred feet. Once I get close to the fire, I'll try to move stealthily around the area, circling in until I find a position to observe from, preferably from high ground.

Zakkoth has remainded quite, follow along, looking into his heart. He tried to cleanse away the nagging feeling he was on the wrong side. That if he just served Takhisis, just one more time....
No. There were NOTHING for him. He wanted to find Leoshin to give a direction again- but no. Zakkoth was guided by his own heart. He will have to cleanse it himself.
But... Caelin has provided the distraction- a conflict at head 'Well, I can charm... and also tell if someone lie. Maybe this will benefit the questioning.'

Caelin returns to the campsite, moving in as stealthily as he can. Which wasn't nearly quiet enough in his mind; he could swear he was accidentally stepping on every dry twig in the area, but so far, nobody in the camp has seen to heard or noticed. The camp itself is in a low spot between surrounding hills, where tall boulders have rolled into a loose jumble. This actually proves pretty beneficial to Caelin; the surroundings offer no protection while making it easier for him to sneak up on the site. He easily slips up one of the hills to watch the camp from above.
Caelin can see four humans and eight kobolds in the group. However, the two different races sit apart from each other. The humans stay near the fire, their weapons stacked against a nearby rock, out of easy reach. The kobolds, their weapons on their belts, take their share of the food and then move about 50 yards away to eat.
As far as Caelin can tell, this is not the rearguard he was expecting. Rather, they seemed more like a group of stragglers who are taking their sweet time. They don't appear to be expecting anyone to follow after them, and have relaxed their guard considerably.

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 17 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 1 Conditions: None. Towards the leeward slop of the hill, Caelin left a marker, indicating the point where he would be along the ridge, a small pile of 4 pebbles indicating the fire and the human mercenaries, with another pile of about 8 stones indicating the kobold encampment. He crouched down, waiting for his companions to make their way to the ridge. Seeing them approach, he moved back down the slop to his companions. "Stragglers, a dozen or so, human and kobold alike. I saw no sign of the hunting lizards we witnessed in Greenest. They've camped about 50 yards apart, likely neither side trusting the other. I believe we should attack both groups simultaneously, however, if we can secure one of each alive, we can use their distrust of one another to our benefit, play prejudice against paranoia." Solemnly he ran a hand along the charred staff he carried on his back, "Master Iro could cause the bush and scrub to grow to thorn and bramble entangling our foes, if either Eliana or Zakkoth can do something similar, they will likely be useful in sudbuing the larger force. The human's are unarmed, currently, their weaponry a short distance from them as they prepare their evening fare, I will take one or two with me and eliminate those four. Thoughts?"

"I'm afraid I don't have an ability like that," Eliana says. "Most of my spells tend to focus on one person instead of a group."

"Since we have the advantage of surprise, splitting our force may actually work." Henry picks some pebbles as well, placing them down on the makeshift map "The main attack force should be comprised of me, Benyt, Eliana and Zakkoth. Benyt and I should engage the kobolds in melee while good Zakkoth and fair Eliana harass the enemy with their magick at a distance; Caelin and Chantilly could sneak up on the humans and hopefully subdue them before they have a chance to react. There's a risk, however: we could be overwhelmed by the enemy's superior numbers." then moves the pebbles that represent the group all by one side "Or we could choose to use surprise and numbers to quickly overrun one group - most probably the humans - and then engage the other. Less chance to find ourselves vastly outnumbered, but the enemy may choose to run away."
Henry strokes his beard pensively while watching the battlefield "Simply put, dividing our forces has a better payoff while staying together is more secure. I would however go with what Caelin initially suggested: splitting up." a little wink at Caelin, an amused smile "Unless you want to follow the Solamnia's custom and go talk to them, Caelin."

Benyt - Female Human Fighter 2
Tilting her helmet toward Caelin, she says, "I'd say striking both is the only way to ensure success. I wouldn't risk the kobolds dispersing and striking us from hiding. Or even worse, running off and telling all their companions they're being followed. Hit the humans before they can arm, and the kobolds with immediate force. What sort of magic is at our disposal? I'm not very familiar with it, so I'd like to know what sort of effect I'll be running in to."
