Amalia nods. Although nobody has sat down, she is clearly too weak to keep standing, so takes a seat on her bed. "One of them crossed our path while we were hunting and acted aggressively, but didn't actually attack. I didn't think anything of that at the time, but with hindsight...it was almost like it was trying to provoke us. I took a shot at it with my bow, and I could have sworn I missed, but the wolf tumbled to the ground, then lay still and whimpered sadly. So I thought, 'maybe I did hit it after all.' When we moved in closer, there was no blood and no wound. My arrow had missed after all. The wolf was only faking an injury, so we would move in closer. And while we were all focused on the 'wounded' wolf, nobody noticed the rest of the pack flanking us until it was too late. Then they all attacked at once, surrounding us..."

Ravarie frowns upon hearing the tale. "Where did the attack take place?" she asks. "Or rather where did the ambush take place?"

"In the wilderness, northeast of town, not far," Amalia answers. "Maybe a mile out, at best."

"Do wolves normally stay around that area?" Ravarie asks. "Or are they new around here completely?"

"I am no expert on wolves, but I do know horses, and some of them can be quite clever. None of them is clever enough to fake being wounded. Whatever is going on here, it seems clear to me someone is directing the animals in question. And given what the innkeeper told us, I don't doubt that they're also connected to the state of the fishing grounds."

"There have always been wolves in the area, but they always kept their distance before," Amalia answers. "Only when they were really desperate would they risk sneaking into town to grab a chicken or two, but they'd bolt if any humans confronted them. But now, they raid almost every night, and will tear apart anyone who gets in their way. And they've never bothered our hunting parties before. Whatever is happening is unnatural. Maybe Marieta is right and the gods are angry with us."

"I don't think it is the Gods," Ravarie says. "Dorias, maybe we could check out the area that they were ambushed, or follow the wolves after their next raid?"

"We should not wait. These people are in terrible danger now, so we must examine the site of the ambush as swiftly as possible. Miss Amalia, may I ask, who is this 'Marieta' you spoke of?"

"Marieta is one of the fishers of this village," Amalia answers. "She's been looking after me a bit, since my mother is away on the Kingfisher. She thinks that praying to Habbakuk is the cause of these problems, not the solution. That by not giving the other gods their due, we're angering them."

Ravarie shakes her head. "I only follow The Blue Phoenix," she says. "And I have never been punished by the other Gods because of it."

Amalia only shrugs, or tries to, but then winces in pain. "Marieta is alone in her belief. The rest of the village believes this is because we have neglected Habbakuk, and we need to pray to him more. But so far, he does not appear to be listening."

"You mentioned the Kingfisher," Ravarie says. shuffling a bit on her feet as she looks down at them. She isn't really sure how to break the news that her mother passed away, so she just kind of falls silent.

Seeing Amalia wince in pain, Dorias glances over at Ravarie. "Lady, Miss Amalia seems sorely injured. Perhaps Habbakuk could spare some of his blessings to help her?"
"Now, I am no friend of the Sea Witch, but Marieta may have a point. One need not abase oneself before only a single god. In my experience, Zeboim is a cruel and fickle creature, but her power over the seas is great. It is hard to gauge the will of the gods, but to placate her while also offering Habbakuk his due could be wise."
(After Ravarie has hopefully tended to some of Amalia's wounds)
"Ah...yes...the Kingfisher," Dorias coughs. "Miss Amalia...do you recognize this pendant?" he asks, producing the copper dolphin from his belt pouch.

While Dorias is breaking the news to Amalia, Ravarie walks up to the woman and starts praying to the Blue Phoenix to heal some of her wounds.

Amalia nods. "Yes, it was one of the three fishing boats that were sent out to deeper waters. My mother and my fiance are both on that ship. That's why Marieta was looking after me while I was injured. I don't have anyone else."
"This is what Marieta says, as well. She thinks we are upsetting Zeboim by not paying tribute to her, and that was the cause of that awful storm earlier today, as well," Amalia says.
When Ravarie heals her, Amalia watches in awe as her wounds heal significantly. She lifts her arm out of her sling and moves it gingerly, and is surprised that she can move it at all. "This is...you are a priest of the true gods? We heard they had returned in the war, but I've never actually seen one before."
Still somewhat distracted by the miracle she just witnessed, Amalia looks at the pendant and seems surprised by the sight of it. "Wow, what a strange coincidence. My mother has that exact same kind of pendant. It was a gift from my father, before he died during the occupation."
