Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 10 of 10 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0Conditions: None.Caelin, turned, noted that the survivors had been spurred to action by Eliana's calls. As he did so, he surged forward to the large hooded figure, and with a deft hand unclasped his cloak and pulled it from the Baaz's now, stoney shoulders, cringing as the removal of the cloak revealed it's fearsome snarl frozen in rough stone. He turned towards his companions and the gate of the Keep proper, and urged those lagging behind to flee for the safety of the walls. "Joran, we need to move, friend. Now. Stay low!" Firing an arrow uphill was difficult enough, doing so when your target was low to the ground and moving with haste, even more so. However, what most concerned the young man, was that if the raiders had finally noticed the Keep itself, how long until the dragon, above, did the same. He kept his dark thoughts to himself, focusing on the immediate threat and moving swiftly to the gate.

Zakkoth pant, look shocked. Was Takhisis's death another test and trick? To test his loyaltly? Did he failed? The kid.. he know something. He is searching the stony corpse of his brethren for more clues. "Child!" He hiss at Caelin. "You know something about this heresy, don't you?!"

Ironwood "Iro" of the Cragpine Vale -- Kagonesti Lorekeeper (Druid) 1 AC: 13 | HP: 6/8 | Passive Perception: 13 | Conditions: Inspiration | Spell Slots: Level 1 (0/2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ironwood's eyes harden as he spies the incoming larger band of dragonwrought and bandits. He races back to the group of civilians and urges them onwards, pointing to the keep with his staff. Safety is there. Move or die! He then continues to keep himself, keeping a wary eye on the incoming raiders. He calls forward to the guards, Hold them open for a moment, we have children with us!

Conard Marpique, 1st lvl Ranger AC: 13 | HP's: 11 of 11 | Passive Perception: 10 | Natural Explorer: Grasslands | Favored Enemy: Dragons | Position of Privilege Conditions: None.
Conard flicks his blade, clearing it of most of the kobold's blood as his eyes shift to observe the incoming wave. "A good question, for another time," he says giving Caelin a searching glance and Zakkoth a nudge towards the keep. "Stay with the group, I doubt they will be terribly happy to let you pass their gates alone."
Raising his shield and moving at an angle to intercept the remaining civilians while also keeping an eye on the approaching force, Conard resumes his rear guard, intending to be the last one out of the fire before the doors swing to.

Garald, with Maddy still in his arms, starts to run to the gates. But he stops when he sees a pack on the ground. I'm not certain who that belongs to, but we might need every ounce of food and supplies before this is over. He stoops and grabs the pack, struggling to lift it with the girls weight pulling on him also. Once he is upright, he finds he is unable to drag the added load behind him. Regretfully, he drops it again and runs for the keep.

The group hurries toward the keep entrance. Caelin quickly grabs the baaz's cloak, and Perceval backtracks to retrieve his gear, which makes him the last one in. Once he is, the portcullis drops and the gates are closed, before any of the invaders can reach the entrance. Now in the keep's courtyard, the party can see the place is filled with villagers huddled together in fear. Many are wounded or burned, and some seem almost catatonic--just staring forward blankly. These are farmers, merchants, and families and it's clear they've never seen anything like this before. There are guards all over the place, and one of them approaches the party as soon as the gate is closed. He is a familiar face; the one who was in the inn earlier, Markguth. However, his face is twisted in rage. He immediately grabs Zakkoth by the collar and draws his sword. "Are you behind this? What do you know about this? Answer me, drac!" he demands. "That's enough, Markguth!" calls a stern, male voice from the parapets. A Neidar dwarf, hair as red as flame but streaked with grey, climbs down a ladder into the courtyard. "I saw them battle the enemy just outside the entrance. This bozak is on our side, I am certain of it. Now release him, and do a head count. We need to get these people inside and quickly. Lord Nighthill's orders." Reluctantly, Markguth releases Zakkoth, and then moves away to carry out the orders he was given. The dwarf beckons the party over to him. "I am Escobert, the keep's steward," he explains. "Please, forgive Markguth. He's a good man. But his sister and her children are still unaccounted for, you see. And tensions are high, as I'm sure you can guess. Speaking of which, I have a niece who was supposed to have arrived in town tonight. Her name is Lilly. I don't suppose any of you happened to see her on your way here?"

Eliana takes a few moments to catch her breath. She was about ready to jump to Zakkoth's defense, but she didn't have to thankfully. "Lilly..ah, she was the one that brought us into town," she says. "Unfortunately, I haven't seen her since she dropped us off at the inn. We all woke up to fire, and we all saved those that we could."

Conard Marpique, 1st lvl Ranger AC: 13 | HP's: 11 of 11 | Passive Perception: 10 | Natural Explorer: Grasslands | Favored Enemy: Dragons | Position of Privilege Conditions: None.
Conard sheaths his sword and unstraps his shield, doubling over the catch his breath. He straightens up and purses his lips when Markguth threatens Zakkoth. Escobert intervenes before Conard can and the young squire simply watches the guardsman walk away. I'm not sure I entirely begrudge the man his prejudices Conard thinks to himself as Eliana answers the steward's question about his niece.
Conard gives Escobert a moment to digest the news before stepping forward. "Castellan," he calls in a tone of respectful authority, "I am Conard Marpique, high-born son of Heartlund and squire of Solamnia. I needs must speak with your lord commander about the defense of his town and the disposition of his forces. Also, I beg an aide for myself and master Lenos," Conard gestures toward Perceval, "We were unable to gird ourselves properly for battle as we fled the wreckage of the Silver Tear."

Safe, for now he mutters as he gets his bearings and does a head count on the civilians. All accounted for, he turns to defend Zakkoth from the guard's outburst, but before he can Escobert shows up to defuse the tension. Seeing that his companions had the matter in hand with the steward, the Kagonesti moves among the rest of the villagers and civilians, offering what help he can to patch cuts, apply salves to burns, and generally make himself useful. Before he does so, he offers a stern reminder of the danger they are still in. Keepmaster Escobert, the danger is not yet passed. We must needs get everyone inside before the dragon returns. As he moves about, he casts the occasional glance at the sky to watch for the dragon's approach. {Mechanics}Ironwood will make a Medicine check with Guidance to help out any villagers or guards that are injured.

"I see," Escobert says to Eliana. "Well, I'll keep a watchful eye out. She's good with an axe, though, so hopefully she can take care of herself in this madness."
Then to Conard, the old dwarf says, "As it just so happens, Lord Nighthill wishes to speak with you all, as well. But first things first. You look like you could use a short rest, and a chance to get equipped properly. I'll escort you to him when you're ready. The keep is a bit understaffed at the moment; not every guard made it here, so I can't pull away anyone from their posts at the moment. But perhaps some of the villagers can help you get your armor on once we're down below."
He then turns to Iro. "Agreed. The walls of the keep will protect us from the raiders, but if that dragon flies by, the people here in the courtyard will be sitting ducks. We've set up a place beneath the keep itself, underground. Not very fancy, but probably the safest place in town. If you and your friends don't mind, we can use a hand in helping get everyone down there."
Iro can see that none of the villagers' injuries appear critical, and most can be taken care of with bandages and simple poultices.

Zakkoth for a moment miss his times as a powerful cleric... no damn dwarf would have dared, or at least been able to shake him like a rug doll. "Thisss.. is fine." Zakkoth hiss. "I would have done the same, if I would have seen him in Teyr." He look back. "The dwarf woman? No. But if it mean anything, my abilities are at your service. If I can help, I'll help."

"I'll start trying to get some of these people inside," Eliana says with a small smile. It was true that she could use a rest, but they needed to get the people inside the keep before the dragon decided to take advantage of the situation. She walks over to one group of the towns people, and tries to get them to move inside where they will be safer.

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 10 of 10 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0Conditions: None.Caelin was relieved when Escobert defused the situation between Zakkoth and the keep's guardsman. He slowly let out the breath he had been holding and sheathed the blade that he had drawn beneath the thick, black cloak he carried over his arm. However, Conard's request to speak with the Lord of the keep concerned the young man, this Nighthill, whoever he was, was likely to react to the information Caelin had with the same, swift, fury his guardsman reacted to presence of their Bozak companion, if not worse. Remembering their encounter in the stable house, and knowing that the man would be looking for assistance to don his chainmail hauberk, Caelin sought out Perceval. Spotting him standing close to the group, he spoke up. "I would be glad to assist you Ser Knight," and as he approached, in a quieter voice, pitched for the large man's ears alone. "There is information that must be conveyed to the Lord of the keep. However, it would be better if you could fabricate it's source as overheard from a Baaz or some such, so that I may avoid being thrown in irons."

Without any dragonlances, high mages, or any other sources of arcane might, taking down the dragon would be near impossible. Best to wait it out - houses could be rebuilt, wells re-dug, and crops replanted - these were just the markers of community, not community itself. If the people here died, then so too did Greenest, even if every building remained standing.
Ironwood moves among the smallfolk, sparing a gentle word, or a stern one, depending on what was needed to get them moving.

Conard nods to the dwarf and moves off to find Sergiu, with his pack and his armor. The young squire tries to offer hope and encouragement to those he passes, and when he finds Sergiu he asks for the young man's help in donning his armor. When alone, or relatively so at least, Conard casually asks Sergiu about Eliana.
