Eliana giggles lightly at Caelin's grumbling before she looks over her shoulder to Zakkoth. "These tunnels remind you of Neraka?" she asks as she starts to move forward after the group. "That doesn't sound very appealing," she admits. Of course, Neraka was never very appealing to her to begin with.

The party moves forward, and eventually the tunnel comes to an end. Here is the source of the sound of water; the stream that runs through the town is on the other side of the sewer grate. The grate and the lock on it, are both highly corroded from years of neglect and exposure to water.

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Caelin looked at the grating, tracing it's footings in the stone, bolts and spikes held it in place, the corrosion was extensive and likly either Conard or Perceval could force it open. However the creak and groan of metal footings ripping from the stone may alert any scouting parties that happened to be close. Caelin shrugged, checked the lock itself, first with the tip of his dagger, and then a more thorough inspection. It, too, was corroded, but there was some small chance he could work a pick into the tumbler and remove the lock without alerting nearby raiders. "Master Iro, a moment ...," and with that he bent to work with a slim, flat prong, and length of sturdy, malleable wire. {Out of Character Actions}OOC: Picking locks isn't my expertise, but it is something I can do. Yeah, yeah, this will verify everything everyone's thought about me ... Anyways, here goes! Rolling Thieves' tools, +6. 1d20+6= 18;TbufjdB91d20+6. A decent enough check, but given the state of the lock it may not even be possible. 1d20+6

Putting out his torch, and relying on Iro's flame for light, Caelin pulls out his tools and gets to work on the lock. Normally, such a simple lock would be no issue for him at all. But it is so corroded and rusted, that he finds it difficult to pick it at all. After a few minutes of trying, he's forced to give up. They'll have to try the key and hope it still works.

Eliana stands on her toes a little bit to see what the others are doing from where she is standing in line. She is under the impression that the others have a handle on the grate. "What are we going to do once we get out of here?" she asks softly. "Sooner or later, someone is going to take notice of us."

Conard squeezes up next to Caelin and pulls Escobert's key ring out of his belt pouch. "Try this, carefully," he whispers passing over the key.
"Good work with the rats," Conard mumbles as he tries to give Caelin space to work while remaining close to the exit, ready to lead the way into the burning town.
To Eliana he says, "We move fast and quiet, preferably avoiding notice, but silencing any raider unfortunate enough to become aware of our passing. We get to the temple, break the siege long enough to get the townsfolk out and then race back here, breaking contact along the way. Hopefully this rabble is as disorganized and ill-lead as they appear, and if they are not, perhaps they will lose their mettle and rout if we can remove their leadership."

Caelin accepts the key from Conard and places it in the lock. Even with the key, it just barely turns, due to the rust and corrosion. Luckily, he manages to turn it all the way, unlocking the grate.

Zakkoth chuckle to Eliana. "Well, here I don't have don't have to clean the blood from the altar, so it's a bit better here.'
------- "Well done, child.' He say to Caelin, waiting for the others to enter. He isn't coward, but he was never the kind to rush to the front.

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Caelin raised an eyebrow at Conard's comments, he accepted the key however he was expecting some lecture on the morality of his picks. Had he not seen them? Not possible. Still, something to consider for later. He accepted the large master key with a nod, concealed his picks once again and bent to work the lock, twisting and working the key through the rust and corrosion. Finally, with a satisfying Click! The lock popped open, he returned the key to Conard, and as he moved towards the fore once again, Zakkoth surprised him with a word of encouragement. Sensing an opportunity, he spoke quietly to the draconian, "Zakkoth, I may require your presence, if we encounter a force of cultists ringing the cathedral we may need to talk our way through, rather than fight. If it comes to that, you and I need to convince these raiders that we exist within their own cult." He paused, considering Conard's harsh words, "Given your appearance, I feel I could convince them that this falsehood were true."

Conard scowls at Caelin as he motions for the other man to move back and sets his shoulder against the grate trying to apply maximum pressure and leverage to move the undoubtedly seized hinges as quietly as possible. "I don't understand," Conard says his expression still dubious after he opens the grate just wide enough to allow the party out of the tunnel. Before exiting he pauses to look up and down the stream, listening for sounds of discovery. "But, even if we could deceive the raiders at the temple they would never let us leave with the innocents sheltering there."

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Caelin looked at Conard, "No, they wouldn't. Which is why I never suggested it. I suggested Master Zakkoth and myself slip through using our guile and wits, so we could co-ordinate the rescue as you engage the perimeter." As they exited the tunnel, Caelin gave a nervous look to the sky, and scanned the horizon, looking for search parties or raiding parties as he prepared to lead the group towards the chapel where Nighthill believe the survivors had gathered for shelter. He looked back over his shoulder, grimly, "Think, if they want to gain admittance to the keep, they will march the survivors to the front gate and start slitting throats until the right, honorable Nighthill opens the bailey in despair. They likely have raiders in with the refugees, to be used as barter should a force come to rescue them. Would you be willing to draw steel if they had a knife to a child's throat?" With a finger he indicated Zakkoth and himself, "I am volunteering my own life to ensure that doesn't happen, by gaining access to the church, placing a foot of steel through the back of the first cultist's skull who means to kill one of the innocents trapped therein."You may not agree with my methods Ser Knight, Caelin thought to himself. But our goals remain the same.{Out of Character Actions}OOC: Moving about 20 yards ahead of the group, scanning for threats, and leading us in the direction of the church while avoiding enemy patrols. Caelin steps out of the tunnel, and into the stream. It's not very deep, and one can easily cross it without worry; it is at its deepest, maybe three feet with a gravel bottom. Brush by the stream is dense, making for good cover. However, within moments of stepping out, he hears noise. Instinctively ducking down, he hears someone moving about in the brush. He also hears voices...speaking in Draconic. On the other side of the stream are two figures in black and six kobolds, searching through the brush. None of them have noticed Caelin yet, as they are intent on their search and he has been whisper quiet so far. "Anything?" one of the baaz asks. "Some of the villagers may be hiding along this stream. If you don't find any, let's keep heading west."

Eliana waits patiently for the others to find out if the coast is clear to move forward. She is eager, despite Zakkoth's reassurance that the tunnel is actually better than Nerka, to get out of the rat infested tunnel.

Caelin Valaerys, pariah of TarkhisisHP: 18 of 18 | AC: 15 | Perception: 15 | Insight: 17 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Caelin looked back towards Conard, he flashed a full open hand, closed to a fist, and then held up a single figure. A quick motion to the cultist's location, and then circled his hand. Hoping that the young knight would understand his silent message, he moved with caution, circling from the stream to appear behind the group as if travelling from the opposite direction. Once in position he stood to his full height and drew his shoulders back, the Baaz's cloak still covered his face, he barked at the cultists in Draconic. "FOOLS!" He yelled, "Have you not heard?!? The Lord of the Keep means to sally forth through the main gates, cavalry, at least ten will come crashing forth and into our flank and you," he pointed to the first Baaz, "and you," he pointed to the dragonwrought kobolds. "Poke at the reeds in hopes of finding scrawny morsels?!? By Skullknight Frulam's decree you will move to the front. NOW." Caelin channeled his earlier frustrations and anger with Conard's harsh judgement into his voice, giving it the snap of rage that it needed. "If you do not fall in I will flay you alive and present your hides to Rezmir to use as a rag with which to wipe filth from his feet!"{Out of Character Actions}OOC: First I need to move into position, so Stealth check; 1d20+8= 22;PwO7CI1K1d20+8. The two baaz exchange looks, and seem confused. One of them, a female, says in Common, "But...it was Frulam who ordered us to find prisoners for the labor camp," she objects.
