"Oh, it's a natural consequence of having a spell be cast by someone," Miss Serpentine says.
"I know all about the history of the Barrier! It's quite a fascinating spell, actually! Not like normal ones," Forblaith says enthusiastically. "You see, it has a series of runes inscribed on the bottom, so all it takes is a simple, if powerful, spell to activate them--but it's still tied to the one who activated them, so it dissipates when they die! Like when you're concentrating on a spell, it goes away if you get killed!"
"I was chosen for my magical capability, and the fact that, as advisor, I would already be under high security. However, we have not yet found another wizard powerful enough to reinforce the Barrier should this attempt succeed, though we've been searching since that man started trying. He's dead now, by the way."
Typhania frowns. "What man?"
"The assassin. Do not worry yourself over it," Serpentine says.

Merry doesn't gorge himself in front of nobility, but the delight that spreads across his face is like he saw his first sunrise. The spices! The cuts of meat from animals he didn't even recognize! Wobbling jellies from exotic berries that no farmer has laid eyes on. He stabs at this and that, really taking his time to savor every bite.

"If the barrier collapses every time the caster dies, wouldn't it have fallen several times by now?" Daos asks. "And what do you mean he's dead? He's been executed that quickly?" ========= (OOC: I guess Permanency isn't a thing anymore in 5E? )

"If another person casts the spell again, it 'transfers' over to them. So, let's say the bearer of the spell is on his deathbed. We have another enterprising young wizard cast the Barrier spell, thus tying it to her. So when the old man dies, the barrier is not broken," Serpentine explains. "And anyway, a man accused of High Treason can be executed without trial if I sign the notice, as I did," King Leonard says. "Not much point in a trial. We saw him stick a dart in my Advisor." *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* [OOC: Permanency was, sadly, removed from 5E. This spell is a Homebrew one I call Plot Device. ]

"Well, it sounds like a solid plan. And so now we have to uncover the source of the assassination plot and save the kingdom, if I follow correctly." Aaron rambles in between bites.

"Is it possible then to have multiple wizards tie themselves to the spell? That way, if one of them dies, the entire barrier doesn't come down," Daos wonders.

"Sadly, no. It's a very fickle and temperamental spell," Serpentine says, sipping her vodka.

"I see," Daos says. He can't help but feel there must be a better way, but he isn't sure what just yet. It's something to think about for later.
For now, he turns his attention to the king. He wasn't sure if this was bad etiquette or not, but he wasn't sure he'd have another opportunity to ask, so he does so. "Your grace, I've heard rumors that you are in talks with Mortahl to form an alliance and invade the Elven Lands. Is there any truth to this?"

King Leonard snorts. "You've been talking to Newsmen, haven't you?"
"Oh, father, please don't invade the Elven Lands!" Forblaith pleads. "I don't like wars!"
"We're not invading the Elven Lands!" he shouts. "If the Dwarf/Elf negotiations fall through, we're throwing our lot in with Mortahl--I have no love for those Elven bastards--but we're not invading."
Miss Serpentine sips her vodka. "From what I understand, the Elven government executed some Dwarven dignitaries passing through. Mortahl is, unsurprisingly, irritated."
"Do the Elves have no notion of diplomatic immunity?" Typhania asks.
"The Elves have no notion of anything good and decent," King Leonard growls.
Meine points to Daos. "Careful what you say about Elves in front of him, dad." He snorts.
"Fine. Ever been to the Elven Lands, Half-Elf? Know about what 'Elven culture' is like?"

"It was a newsman who I heard the rumor from, yes," Daos admits. "I am glad to hear it is not true. And no, I have never been to the Elven Lands."

Qurrak in the end obey the woman who looks the most dominante here. But he isn't esting yet. He is very nervouse. Those humans had complex ways of eating, and the king seems to not take kindly to more people beside himself. He watch how the others eat.

"If you don't mind me asking another question, your grace, there are many rumors also surrounding the deposing of Duke Matthew," Daos says. "Is it true this was because of a...personal conflict between you two?"

Between savoring bites of the banquet set before them, Merry chokes just a bit upon a chunk of potato and quickly washes it down with a swig of wine. Then, with a bit of a hitch in his voice, he chimes in on the Elven issue.
"Oh, I would really love to visit the Elven lands some day. I've heard they are quite beautiful. The lands, that is. And I would get to see just how terrible they are!"
Was that last part tacit agreement with the king? Or just to mollify him after mentioning how beautiful they are? Your guess is as good as mine.
