"I only heard that he was quite critical of you, your grace; I don't really have any details beyond that," Daos admits. "Did your other vassals object to you revoking his title?"
To Merry, he says, "I am not sure how welcome we would be in the Elven lands. My understanding is they do not favorably on outsiders."

"Tonight's a good chance to find out. I have the authority to do so, of course," the King says.

Daos nods in understanding. From what he knows from history books, while a king does have the right to revoke a title, there's always a risk involved. Even if it was done for a good reason, the other vassals might see it as a threat to their own power. This could cause them to band together and overthrow the king. It may also make them more susceptible to plots against the king; perhaps, for instance, like plots by this Night's Breath. He wonders if there is any connection to the Duke's revoking and the Countess of Cryford throwing in with these assassins.
He also ponders about the upcoming ball. Would the Countess of Cryford or any of the nobles, for that matter, even give them the time of day? None held titles of their own, after all--at least, not as far as Daos knew. Granted, he only met Merry, Aaron and Atrel the previous night, but he didn't think any of them were nobles. If only the di Maravoni brothers were still here; they would be a great boon in this endeavor. Well, he'd just have to do his best and hope it all works out.

The rest of the breakfast is eaten in silence. Miss Serpentine finishes her vodka.
"Now, I suggest we begin the investigation," she says, pulling the four adventurers aside. "The servant's quarters are downstairs. Now, if they're being bought off, then finding someone with a motive will help. But if they're a Night's Breath plant, it could be anyone. Opportunity is more important here. I, meanwhile, need to have words with our spymaster," she says with a glare.

"Very well," Daos says, standing up. "Do you have any advice on how to question these servants?"

"You are no nobles. This is an advantage. You have no true authority over them, so any conversation you have with them is merely a chat between peers. They will be more open than in an official investigation. Once again, this may not help in identifying an Agent, but it will help to identify who is not one."

"Ha, this should be simple. I mean, who wouldn't want to speak to the newest musician, right?" Aaron grins.

Merry finishes up his meal and then glances around with somewhat wide eyes at all the opulence around them.
"The musician has a point! People looove a good ditty, especially if it gives them an excuse to drink more wine. And that leads to loose slips sinking ships. Or, I think that's how the saying goes. Anyway, since he's supposed to be a bit of a rogue, he could probably even get away with making up some naughty fibs to give them juicy gossip, then turn around and ask them if they have any naughty secrets. Then we can check out all the ones who seem too good at hiding their reactions!"

Atrel was at a loss for the meal, trying to observe how it was proceeding without it looking too obvious, but the notion of dealing with non-noble servants finally put him at some sense of ease. "So we're just needing to talk with them?" Atrel repeated rhetorically stepping up to actually be with the group. "And what do we do if we find a Night's Breath plant? Do we take them down?" He asked, catching his own punch to accent the point.

"Exactly. I can't guide you there, of course. It would raise suspicion. But it's that way," she says, pointing to a long hallway. She grabs another bottle of wine as she walks off.
At the end of the hallway, a Dwarf loiters by a door marked "Servant's Quarters." "I don't recognize you, he grumbles."

"Well hello there, Alphus Dimper, new court musician at your service. We were wondering if this is the way to the servant's quarters," Aaron plays as dumb as he can with the dwarf.

"Yeah, the door's right behind me, you fop," he snorts. "But what about these friends'a yours? They don't look like musicians to me."
