Lillian sighs and buries her head in her hands. "I would be delighted to do that, but I signed a contract with the mother of one of Jherek's allies. I--unwisely, I know--promised to return her to Buho, absolve her of all charges, and find a suitable husband for her. In exchange for information helpful to your search. So, as much as I would love to do as you suggest, I'm stuck here." Lillian curses to herself, furious that she indebted herself like that for a...wild goose chase.

Amodeo shrugs. "Breaking a Tardish contract is no easy feat. But there are always...loopholes."

"Do you have suggestions? Because I'm in dire need of some," Lillian asks. She does have a vague idea of how she'd convince Katya to go along with it, should she find her--and Charm Person could always come in handy. But since the Barone seems to be very eager to abandon Jherek altogether, she wonders if he has any ideas on escaping the contract. "I believe I phrased it as 'I, Lillian [one name only], promise to return Katya, Merida's Daughter, from the Wyld Boys, releasing her from whatever coercion she is under, achieving full amnesty for any crimes comitted with them, and to find her a suitable husband, in return for the cooperation of her mother, Merida Waelnod, in finding her.'" Lillian shrugs. "If we're already lying about finding Jherek, I could invent a story about what happened to Katya. A story that conveniently fulfills or invalidates every aspect of the contract. But that might be hard to swallow."

Ladonna quietly listens at this point. She was mulling over the whole situation. There was pros and cons with this whole situation. She knew how to woek within Tardish confines, but Calabria was something she knew nothing about.

"Mereida, you say? The crippled knight on her deathbed?" Amodeo asks. "Why not just wait it out? You didn't mention a time limit on the contract. And if the knight dies before the contract is fulfilled, it would be voided."

Lillian slowly nods. "Yes...yes, that would work. Thank you for the idea, Barone." Then, with a coy grin, she says, "Well, it's a good thing we dealt with Jherek so quickly, then."

"Then we are ready to discuss terms then?" Amodeo asks. "Your own role is quite small, given the massive rewards offered. Agree, and all you must do is two things: First, give me any and all information you have on the defenses and weaknesses of Hart. Any additional intel you manage to acquire once you return there, I can arrange for you to have it sent directly to me. Second, when the day of liberation comes, you help ensure its success by making certain that the river gates remain open for the fleet. I'm sure this will be a trivial task for women of your various talents. And in return, once Tardiff has been successfully liberated, you will both be given the titles of barone, and all the lands and wealth that come with it."

"Out of curiosity,"Ladonna says. "What are you getting out of this? Who are you working under?"

"Well, once Tardiff is liberated, it will need a provisional government, of course, lest the whole nation fall into chaos," Amodeo answers. "I will be the one to head up said government."

"So we would serve under you, in this new government?" Ladonna asks.

Amodeo nods. "That is correct."

"Well, I, for one, am happy to help," Lillian says, raising her glass. "I'm no military strategist, so I'll have to spend a few hours working out all the details. But as you said, we'll have no problem keeping the river gates open. Won't we, Ser Marche?"

"Excellent," Amodeo says. "I believe this arrangement will benefit us all, and the people of Tardiff, as well."

"But this trip to Buho was wasted," Ladonna says with a sigh.

"Not at all," Amodeo says. "As I said, I will let the count know you were helpful to my task, and he will be sure to reward you for giving me quick reason to return home."
