Abelaard finishes his writing with a flourish and closes his journal. He looks up at the older knight again and clears his throat, "Ahem... Sir Karl, is it your intention to provide us with horses and pack animals for our journey? I, for one, do not have access to the steel necessary to procure a steed and tack."

Sir Karl clears his throat. "I'm afraid that the knights' resources and budget are tied up at the moment, the bulk of it earmarked for tracking down the remnants of the Dragonarmies. So I'm afraid any supplies you need will have to be paid out of pocket, at least for now. But not to worry. The trip should only take three or four days."

After agreeing to the mission, the party heads out to the Vingaard market. They all pitch in to buy a mule (which Gordon names Molasses) to carry some of their excess gear. She's a bit of a kicker, and they quickly learn not to stand behind her when they can help it.
The next morning, they all set out with Sir Karl. They spend the next several days traveling east towards the Throtl Outpost. The weather has been pleasant for most of this journey, and in the evenings, Sir Karl shares stories of key events from the War of the Lance. Very few travelers are on the road, and the few that the party meets hurry to the west, with only a curt greeting.
As the sun slips behind the gathering clouds, a cold breeze blows out of the east. In the distance, the party sees a wagon mired down in a low stream. A young human girl and an older human man are sitting on the west bank by a campfire. Near the fire stands a tent and a picketed horse.

After several days of war stories and conversations with men, the young girl on the side of the road is a welcome sight to Abelaard. He calls out, "Ho, the camp!", and waves toward the travelers with a large grin on his face.

At Abelaard's call, the man jumps to his feet. He says something to the girl, who quickly gets up and moves behind him. He stands protectively in front of her. "Who goes? And what do you want?" he calls back. His voice is tired, but with an edge of anxiety to it.

"We're just on our way to Thotl to investigate some 'strange happenings,'" Gordon answers, with all the bluntness of a hammer. "Unless you're a Sivak Spy or something, we've got no problem with you."

He called by way of greeting, "my uncouth, though well intentioned companion speaks truth. We travel upon this road in an effort to bring a measure of safety and security to those who travel it's length." He indicated the older Knight who traveled with them, "We are led by the irreproachable Ser Gaardsen, a Knight of the Rose. My well meaning companion, Gordon, our allies Abelaard of Palanthus, Rof, a veteran and friend of the Solamnic Orders, Robin Smallhill, our keen eyed tracker, and Gordon, our stalwart warrior." He smiled, stepping forward, cautiously to present an outstretched hand, "and I am Dietrich, novice of the Crown. How may we be of service, good fellow?"

Torquato ClorindidisHP: 7/7 - AC: 13 - Perception: 13 - Insight: 11 - Inspiration: No Torquato sighed, both in relief and in annoyance. The relief was for the pause in their march, to his parents dismay physical activity had never been his forte. At the same time, he hoped that encounter wouldn't amount to a huge loss of time. He wasn't particularly interested in the two people near the wagon, so he left the matter of handling them to his companions, preferring to remain silent.

Gordon frowns at Dietrich. "You're using a lot of long adjectives, there, bud." He says. Then, he starts to laugh, instead. "Why'd you name me twice, though?" he chuckles.

"We're just on our way to Thotl to investigate some 'strange happenings,'" Gordon answers, with all the bluntness of a hammer. "Unless you're a Sivak Spy or something, we've got no problem with you." Although it's not clear why, Gordon's words seem to agitate the man further. He says something to the girl in Solamnic, which Gordon and Robin do not understand, but the others do. "Papa, no," the girl responds, her eyes now as wide as saucers. (OOC: Translation from Solamnic: "When I give the signal, you must run as fast as you can. Do not look back.") "I am Dietrich, novice of the Crown. How may we be of service, good fellow?" Dietrich's words seem to give the man some pause. He hesitates, and then says, "Are you really with the knights?" "We are," says Sir Karl, stepping forward. " Deghnyah. Est tsarthai en paranaith," he adds in Solamnic. (OOC: Translation from Solamnic: "Well met. We are friends.") Looking between the two knights, the man sags a bit in relief. "Thank the returned gods," he mutters. He gestures for them to approach. "If you are truly friends, then you may join us, if you wish. I fear I don't have much hospitality to offer, though."

"I don't know what a sivak is," the man admits. "But I've heard rumors of bad things coming out of Thotl. And I've heard rumors of bandits in disguise. When you said you were heading there, I grew worried. I try to avoid Throtl myself at all cost. You never know who you can trust these days." As far as Torquato can tell, the man is completely sincere.

"Don't worry about offering much in way of hospitality, we bring our own provision; company and tale of news on Throtl may be though. First though, if you need further reassurance, is your wagon ok where it is?" Robin offers giving more than one look for what it carries.
