I should note that I'm not excited about doing this quest primarily for content reasons. I have a weird and uncomfortable relationship with mind control in the best of times, and making it overtly sexual crosses way over the threshold of what I'm comfortable with in a game.

Personally, I really doubt Daos would ever create this sort of storyline. My interpretation is that this is just a wildly exaggerated rumor/Krest is a really sexual person so he is projecting what he would do with these kind of powers on the hermit. Maybe the old man is just really into fashion and asks girls to model his creations, or something like that lol consider also that he has been described as a weird foreigner so I'm sure there is also some level of racism/xenophobia in creating this sort of reputation around him.
But if you prefer Poppy could go solo to find him, just not to lose our chance at advancing the note quest line.

Alright, spoilers for this particular storyline:
1.) In hindsight, I should probably have this officially written down somewhere, but I don't employ SA in any of my games for any reason. Especially not on PCs. Never have, never will. I may be an old school DM, and don't have any problem with PCs getting beaten, mangled or even killed, but SA is not something I enjoy in my games at all.
2.) Thinking about it logically, if even half of what Krest said about this guy was true, one would question why the church hasn't done anything about him yet. That's the main clue that it's more rumor than fact. They'd have gone full blown Inquisition on him were that not the case. (One might also question why the locals are content to have him live so close. You'd assume they'd pack up and head somewhere safer, if not outright form an angry mob and storm the place with torch and pitchfork in hand.)
3.) The intent was to do a bit of world-building and set a mood. The concept of a 'witch' is an old one, but it boils down to the idea of a woman having power being terrifying in our patriarchal and misogynistic society. Because this setting is a matriarchal society and because the Elonnori have disdain for arcane magic (they see it as being too similar to what the Ancient Ones used), I turned the idea on its head, with the idea being that a man who wields power would be scary/dangerous and would happily abuse it if given the chance. Plus, it's difficult to do the old 'scary witch in the woods' bit when magic is so ubiquitous. (Indeed, I was originally going to call him a 'warlock' but worried that you all would assume I was speaking about the class instead of just the male version of the word witch.) So I wanted him to sound scary and dangerous, so that when you actually meet him it would be a real surprise to see what he's actually like, which is fairly harmless, if a bit eccentric. (And yes, Matt is correct in that Krest is a bit of a perv and was projecting. I rolled him up randomly, and that was one of the traits he got, so I went with it.)
In any case, since it was just world-building/mood-setting, if any of this is still a dealbreaker, I can go back and edit the post so that Krest just gives a vague warning of the hermit being dangerous or something.

No, it's all right; as long as it doesn't amount to anything. Sorry, I feel like a buzzkill for making a big deal out of nothing.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a game, in the end. And now I know to avoid that mistake entirely in the future. So it all works out.

Can you clarify what the current game situation is, Daos? I feel like everybody is on different pages right now, and I'm struggling to understand what's going on and what our options are.

Uh...sure, I guess.
The party came across a caravan of fish merchants coming out of Long Beach, heading to Rainalia. The party talked with them and exchanged rumors. Three bears emerged from the wood, smelling the fish. April volunteered to hold them off so the merchants could escape. The merchants are now attempting to escape, but the bears are starting to pursue.

OK, so they didn't dump any fish to distract the bears, like April suggested? You didn't address that one way or another in the post, so I couldn't tell if you noticed that.
Horizons' post also seemed to indicate that she hadn't read the post where the bears appeared, which added to my confusion.

Ah, sorry, I meant to mention that in the post and I guess I forgot. No, they didn't dump any fish. One gets the impression they're just barely making any profit and are worried about losing any of their merchandise, even at the cost of their lives. (Which also might explain why they couldn't hire any guards.)

Hey Daos, just an heads up.
The 'shove' action works differently than the usual attacks (that have to beat a certain AC to hit.).
Here's how 'shoving' work in 5e:
