Theron's eyes dart from Ryan to Ladonna. "Head down to the level below, when we've barely seen what's on this floor?" He sounds more confused than annoyed, though there may be just the slightest hint of the latter in his voice as well. "Since we started out from Buho, everyone's made a big deal about how time is a critical factor on this mission. And if we fail to find the Hooded One on the floor below, it'll cost us time to double back and have to search through here again. The most efficient way to do this is to go floor by floor, leaving no stone unturned."
The gnome lets out a sigh. "But sitting here arguing about it is an even more egregious waste of time, so if you're going to insist...well, hanging out right here isn't going to kill the Hooded One, unless the plan is to wait for him to die of old age."
His gaze sweeps across the other party members, inquiring. "I'm beginning to find this burden of having to take a vote, every time there's a decision to be made, a little cumbersome...and a lot time-consuming. At some point in the future, maybe we should discuss the possibility of granting someone the responsibility of leadership -- someone who could make these kinds of judgment calls on the group's behalf, without waiting to collect everyone's input. It could even be a role that rotates throughout the group, periodically."
"But for now..." Theron's voice is beginning to betray more than a little exasperation. "I think Jherek and I are in favor of exploring the rest of this level, while Acolyte McIntyre and Miss Marche would prefer we descend to the floor below to continue our search. Where do the rest of you stand?"

"I vote with Jherek and Theron" Katya says. "We've barely explored this level at all. Let's look at least a little further before we decide that it's empty."

Ingot nods slowly. "Master Wiggledigit...is correct. We must not allow ourselves...to fall into the trap...of inefficient democracy. It is a pity...that Master Auger...could not accompany us. I understand...he was the leader...of the last expedition."
Finbul chuckles. "Yeah, I bet he was," he says with dripping sarcasm. "Anyway, I vote we stay on this floor for now, too. Even if there's nothing here, at least we won't have to worry about something coming up behind us when we do descend to the third floor."
"This logic...seems sound...to me," Ingot says. "I will also vote...to remain...on this floor."

"Well, what are we waiting for, then?" Theron says, his tone chipper. "Jherek and I determined that we can pass safely for a considerable distance down this tunnel...let's go see where it leads!" With that, he reverses direction back down the northeast tunnel they'd begun to explore. When they reach the point where Theron and Jherek turned around earlier, he pauses, motions for the rest of the party to stop, and listens carefully for any faint noises that might be echoing from deeper within the tunnel.

Ladonna shrugs a bit and motions for Jherek and Theron to lead the way as they are the ones scouting out the place.

Once the party is at the spot where Theron and Jherek left off, Theron tries to listen carefully for any noise coming down the tunnel. But he only hears deafening silence.

Jherek follows just behind and to the left of Theron, searching places he thinks the gnome can't see, occasionally prodding something interesting with the haft of one of his axes. "Looks like a big empty hallway...hey, how would this hooded fella have gotten a whole suite of bed furniture down into this old mine?" The thought is spoken as soon as it hits his mind, stream of consciousness style.

Ryan finally concedes. "Fine, but I want to see if we can't find a way to lock the contraption before we abandon it."
Ryan goes back to see if something can be inserted to lock the mechanism, before returning to the group. "I hope I won't have to say I told you so."

The party moves another 60 feet down the tunnel. This branch from the primary tunnel probably followed a vein of ore very closely, for the floor is irregular and the passage meanders considerably. At long last, the passage widens, and two sets of floor grooves extend toward the end of the passage, some 10 feet ahead. There seems to be an oblong object about four feet in length on the floor near the dead end, but it is obscured by a massive patch of yellowish mold, which covers the last 10 feet of floor and walls, and even parts of the ceiling. Meanwhile, Ryan heads all the way back to the lift--taking the stone of Continual Light with him, thus leaving Katya, Ingot, Ladonna, and Finbul in total darkness. When he arrives there, he sees there is a break lever, which Ingot already set when they arrived. ================ Theron spends (1d10): 3 rounds searching for traps [F/RT 30%] (1d100): 57, fail. Jherek hums a bit absentmindedly as he searches for traps...his head lookin up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right, up, down, left....left, right, left...his eyes settle on the large yellow mass in the middle of the floor and his whistle draws out and dies. “Would you look at that mess over there?”
“Mouse, Lil...do you guys see that pile of....well of...honest it looks like a big old mess of me Ma’s Lightday egg scramble...she uses the vinegar from pickles, makes the eggs bright...” Jherek drifts closer to the big mass, his axe handle out in front so as to gently prod the big ol thing. “I figure it ain’t eggs..whatcha think it is? Looks slimey...Bet it would make Kat and Marche scream if I was to dribble a bit on um while they sleep.” Jherek takes several more steps forward til he’s at the border of normal ground and yellow covered rock.
