Well, I generally hold paladins to a much higher standard than normal. A paladin's word shouldn't just be given so easily. That's just me, I suppose. But since Glenn also managed to resolve everything peacefully without having to break either promise or resorting to violence, then that should be taken into account. If it had occurred otherwise, I would have seriously made the player have the character atone for his foolishness.

I don't know. It seems to me that if things had seriously gone south, he would have had to break his word (to one or the other) and this might be interrepted as a chaotic act. Therefore, he would lose his powers (temporarily, probably) and be forced to atone anyway. Wouldn't that be punishment enough to teach the player a lesson?

We're saying the exact same thing.

Here's an interesting scenario:
An evil cult is bent on summoning a demon that will be unleashed in the city, killing hundreds. Worse still, the ritual to summon the demon will involve an innocent child. Now, the child won't be hurt as part of the ritual, but his (or her) soul will be the conduit to open the gate.
A party, including a paladin, learn of this and try to stop it. They fight off the evil cultists and their minions outside their base. The paladin manages to break through their lines and reach the ritual chamber. However, he's used up all of his powers and he's very badly wounded (single digit HP). His companions are either dead or still fighting off the cultists. Either way, he's all on his own.
The paladin realizes he only has a couple of seconds before the demon emerges. If the demon steps through the portal, it will likely kill the paladin and then run amok in the city, murdering hundreds. There is a way out, though. If the paladin kills the child, he will disrupt the conduit--the gate will seal and the demon cannot emerge.
Even if the paladin was fully healed and rested, the odds of him surviving against the demon one-on-one are very slim.
What should the paladin do? Should he let the demon emerge and try and fight it? Or should he kill the child--an innocent--to save the lives of hundreds?

I would just try to fight the demon when it came through. Morality shouldn't be put on a scale, and even if hundreds are saved, you still killed one innocent person in cold blood. That's never going to go away.

Joe's right, killing the child would be unacceptable.
