"Perhaps we could try asking around town if anyone here knows of the location of Cragmaw Castle?" asks Zoya. "The locals may know something."

"Cragmaw Castle? Doesn't sound familiar, but geography was never a key area of study for me. I know a gnomish cartographer in Waterdeep, but it would probably be more efficient to ask around here."

Navarra smiles at the waitress. "Got some tea or somethin', love? There's a time for booze, but in my book that time ain't mornin' time. Got things to do and asses to kick."
In response to a query about the castle, she scratches the back of her head in thought. "Yeah, I dunno. Saw a few old castles 'long the shore sailin' into Neverwinter, but I ain't never heard o' none called Cragmaw. But then, this ain't where I come from neither though. What's it matter? We goin' a-plunderin' in some old ruin? Y'ain't gotta have a paramour in every port to love you some exotic mystery booty, and the ol' seadog's not a bad friend to have at your back." She raps her knuckles on her shield's holy symbol by way of implying her invitation for herself to join. "And this cutlass ain't just for show."
"You got the right idea, Zoya. I like the way you think." She gets up from her chair and looks around the lodge's patronage thoughtfully, but in truth approaches a table mostly at random.
"Hoi, friends. Any o'you's ever heard of a Castle Cragmaw?"

The table of farmers that Navarra approaches mostly just shrugs, although one of them says, "Maybe Thorton, the guildmistress of the Miner Exchange, would know? She's probably the most well-traveled of anyone in town."
A moment later, there is a loud commotion outside. The party can hear shouting voices, including that of a young boy's.

Orianna watches Navarra jump into action, but the commotion outside draws her attention away. She stands from the table, and goes to see what exactly is going on.

"Thorton, eh? Thanks, friend, I might just do that." She slaps a few copper coins down on the table. "Buy yerselves a round on me, fellas."
The commotion outside instinctively draws Navarra's attention. "That ruckus sound like trouble?" she asks nobody in particular, and returns to the table to strap her shield on her arm and opens the door with Orianna to see what the fuss is about.

Klaxon rises from his seat brushing the bread crumbs off the front of his shirt, puts his pack back on and casts a magic spell [mage armor] sheathing himself in a field of Eldritch energy.

Orianna, Zoya, Navarra and Bareris head to the front door, while Klaxon casts a spell on himself. Bareris, his focus solely on reaching the door as stealthily as possible, fails to notice what is going on behind him. The barmaid, Elsa, not expecting him to suddenly slow down, collides into him, dropping her tray of dirty plates as the two of them tumble to the ground in a heap, making a loud crash.
Looking outside, the party sees a group of four humans in studded leather and short swords, each one wearing a red cloak. They have surrounded a young halfling boy, perhaps no older than ten years. One of them reaches out and grabs the kid by the shirt collar, hefting him up into the air, and letting his little legs kick in the air helplessly. "I thought I told you not to mess in our business, kid," he says.
It's at that point there is a loud crash from inside the inn, from Bareris and Elsa colliding. This grabs all four of the thugs' attention. The one holding the boy looks directly at the group at the door. "Move along, outsiders. This is Phandalin business. Go back to your drinks, if you know what's good for you."

Bareris makes a stealth check (1d20+5): 1+5 = 6, fail.
Klaxon casts Mage Armor on himself. His AC improves to 16 for 8 hours.

Fosco joins the group outside and glares at the one holding the boy as intimidating as a Halfling can achieve.

Navarra throws a side-eye to Bearis, but ignores his gaffe and takes a step forward. "I just ain't got it in me let this go," she says, as much to herself as to anyone else. She intones a quick spell to augment her combat prowess, draws her cutlass, and bangs it against her shield to draw the men's attention.
"I don't like yer tone, boy," she calls out after Orianna, her voice booming like the roar of a bear, taking a few slow and deliberate steps forward. "If'n I ain't scared o'no red wizards, I sure as shit ain't scared o'some inbred limp prick milksops what gotta gang up against a half'a halfling. Let's see just how big yer swingin' dicks are after I cut'em off!"

Elsa's face turns as red as a tomato, and after the monk gets off her, she gets to her feet and scurries to the kitchen.
The ruffians chuckle at this. The one holding the boy aloft says, "Well, well. Here's a whole pack of little puppies. What do you want, puppies? Come here to bark at us?" he snarls. The other ruffians chuckle at this.
By this point, a number of villagers have stopped what they are doing to watch the scene play out from a safe distance. None seem eager to get involved. Several of the patrons in the inn move to the windows to watch, as well.
Navarra shrugs off her pack, leaving it in her chair, and then joins the others while muttering a prayer. She, Orianna and Klaxon feel a surge of power, like the electric feeling one gets just before a storm, despite the fact it's a clear and sunny day; the spring equinox, even!
The ruffians stop laughing at this. "Listen here, stranger. Maybe you don't get how things work here. This is Redbrand territory. This town belongs to us. You mess with us, and you're hurting all these good people," he says, gesturing to the watching villagers. "Because they're the ones who are gonna suffer most, get it? You don't like it? Feel free to lodge a sternly worded letter of complaint to the townmaster. Otherwise, sod off. Or you, and everyone in this town, will come to regret it."
=============
Bareris makes an Intimidation check vs. DC 15 (1d20+3): 4+3 = 7, fail. Navarra is now in light encumbrance (-10 speed).
Navarra casts Bless on herself, Orianna and Klaxon. They can now add 1d4 to any attack rolls or saving throws made for 10 rounds.
(OOC: Click on the map to enlarge. One square is about 5 feet in size. The V's are villagers, the b is the halfling boy, and 1-4 are the ruffians.)
