The following morning (Ches 21st), the party wakes up at the inn (having each spent a gold piece to stay another night) and meet up in the common room for breakfast before heading out toward the ruins of Thundertree to the north.
After eating, Bareris then stands up and makes several silent hand motions that seem unintelligible to everyone else. He then tries miming something else, but to no avail. Finally, Navarra stands up, too and interjects. "What he means to say is, we're heading in another direction. Good luck with the whole finding the missing dwarf thing, and all. But we got wind of a job over in Neverwinter, and it's too juicy to pass up. So we decided to head there together."

"Good luck," Orianna says to the pair. "As for the rest of us, do we know how long this trip is suppose to take?"

“Best wishes!” Fosco says as they leave. Once they are by themselves again, he remarks, “Is it just me, or do people leave this group a lot?”

Balasar waves to those leaving the group and merely shrugs "I don't know I just joined the group so how often do people leave?"

Baeris hands Orianna her rations back, as he will be taking his donkey along with him.
After Baeris and Navarra step outside of the inn, Zoya says, "Surely it is not because of me. I make sure to bathe and groom regularly. In any case, Thundertree is around 55 miles north of here. So we should arrive there on the third day of travel."

Orianna is now encumbered (-10 speed).

“Well, our first group was me, Orianna, a cleric, a Dragonborn, and another Tiefling. The cleric unfortunately died fighting goblins, and the other two parted ways when we reached Phandalin. There, we met up with Zoya, Bearis, and another person...I can’t quite remember, actually...it feels so long ago. Anyway, he left after another quick adventure, and we met Navarra and Tieren here yesterday morning, when we fought some Redbrands by the tavern. We tracked them down to their base, where we freed you, and you know the rest.”

Balasar nods his head while listening to the retelling then holds his hand to his chin and raises an eyebrow "Hmm that does sound like quite a few people, sorry to hear about the fallen comrade, sounds like people were just not ready for the adventure if you ask me and that'd be why they departed at least that's my take of it. Alright so shall we proceed onward then?"

"Gotrek," Zoya supplies to Fosco. "The dwarf warrior who escorted that little girl we rescued back to Neverwinter."
"Well, rest assured, I'll be here to see this through the end," Klaxon states in a way that is in no way ominous foreshadowing.

Orianna purses her lips together when Klaxon speaks up, but doesn't comment on that fact. "Let's get going," she says as she stands up. She puts her rations up that were just given to her, and heads for the exit.

The party sets out, and travels northward for most of the day, alongside the western edge of the Neverwinter Wood. After a day of travel, when the sun starts to sink and they start to look for a place to make camp for the night, they hear a rustling in the forest. Suddenly, a massive creature leaps out of the woods with a roar. At first it would appear to be a bear, but the creature is covered in feathers and has a beak and owl-like face. "Watch out!" Zoya calls, drawing her sword. The creature prepares to charge.

Orianna pulls out her bow, and quickly ducks behind a tree to hide before firing her arrow at the owl-bear.

Balasar the ranger hesitates to attack the creature. "It could be just trying to protect it's young if they are nearby." the ranger tries to calm the creature down as best he can if that fails he will attack as the others appear ready to do.

Before anyone can act, the owlbear leaps at Zoya, taking her down and slashing and pecking at her brutally. Orianna slips behind a tree and fires an arrow, but misses. Fosco tries to inspire Balasar, as he calls upon his vast nature lore to determine what the beast wants. Owlbears are not natural creatures, but monsters, so he cannot hope to calm it; but he does know that they are ruthless hunters with ill tempers and fear nothing. Whether it's just hungry or is protecting its eggs, it's clear that it won't be scared off. Finally, Klaxon hurls a firebolt at it, but misses.
