The party spent the whole day shopping and resting. The day after that, Ches 30th, they set out that morning. As it turns out, the hidden and lost Wave Echo Cave was much closer than anticipated--only a mere 15 miles east of Phandalin, in fact. Traveling through the hills, they reached it in less than a day. It was late afternoon when they arrived to the gaping, dark maw that is the cave opening.
"Who shall be stuck with torch duty?" Iroas asks. "Both Zoya and I need our free hands for our shields, after all."

"I will most likely be scouting ahead, so that leaves Fosco and Balasar," Orianna says.

“I’ll do it,” Fosco volunteers.

Zoya lights a torch and hands it to Fosco. With that settled, the group steps inside the cool cavern. The entrance tunnel leads into a large-cavern supported by a natural pillar of rock and containing three stalagmites. In the western part of the cave, behind the column of rock, are three bedrolls and a heap of ordinary supplies-sacks of flour, bags of salt, casks of salted meat, lanterns, flasks of lamp oil, pickaxes, shovels, and other gear. Amid the supplies, they see the body of a dwarf miner, dead for at least a week. The northeastern section of the cavern has collapsed, forming a ten-foot-wide, twenty-foot-deep pit. A sturdy hemp rope is tied off around a nearby stalagmite and dangles down the side of the pit, at the bottom of which is a rough-hewn tunnel heading northwest and east.

Balasar will take a torch out and light it as well.

Orianna goes to inspect the dead dwarf, hoping it isn't one of the brothers.

While Balasar lights up a second torch, Iroas joins Orianna in investigating the dead body. "Damn," the priest mutters. "This is Tharden Rockseeker, Gundren's brother." He stands and looks around the cavern. "But where is Nundro? I don't see his body, which is both a relief and a bit worrying."

Orianna frowns, and looks over towards the pit. "It looks like we are going down."

Zoya approaches the pit and looks down. "Someone left a rope tied off here," she observes. "Perhaps the missing Rockseeker is deeper within?"
Iroas gets to his feet. "And in danger, if whatever killed poor Tharden went after him."

"Do you want me to go down first, or does someone else want to go first?" Orianna asks.

Balasar "I can go first but question now is how do we get the torches down, douse em, or drop em down the climb down and relight it?"

"I'll go first, then you can toss me your torch while you climb down," Iroas tells the dragonborn. He easily scales down the rope into the pit, then waits for the others.

Balasar tosses the torch down so it should fall unlit end down, then climbs down.

Once everyone has safely climbed down, Iroas asks, "So, north or east?"
