Alonzo raises an eyebrow at the mayor's request. He bows slightly, the angle precisely calculated, if the mayor is knowledgeable in courtly etiquette. A greeting among equals. He whispers softly to Flynn in Elven, quietly so as not be be overhead. Humble indeed. You're a paragon of humility. Why, you're almost as good at singing as you are at humility. He smiles at the mayor. My brother is correct. We are here to resolve your bandit trouble. Now, unfortunately, the notices were a tad imprecise as to the number of bandits and the exact reward. A trifling oversight, of course.

Aerendyl vaer Tharandiir, Paladin of BahamutHP: 12 of 12 | AC: 15 | Perception: 12 | Insight: 12 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Aerendyl remembered the first time he had seen the spirit of Tharandiir, without a thought, he had bent a knee. He only shook his head at the Mayor, "I have learned under the guidance of Tharandiir, an ancient draconic spirit, studied the teachings of his Lord, Bahamut, the Lord of the North Winds." A pause, "I do not bow to those who have not earned my respect, or my loyalty, so you will understand if I do not obey what you consider custom."Nodding towards Alonzo, "As my companion states, we are here at your request, to deal with a threat that you are ill-equipped to resolve. We will see the task through, though the more specifics you have, the quicker you will be rid of these bandits and your subjects grateful for your esteemed leadership."

Judge Menlo turns to Aerendyl in anger, but the Mayor stays him and gives the paladin a knowing glance. It's hard to read his expression, but it's definitely closer to "Don't worry, bowing is a mere formality" than "What the heck did you say about me, you little punk."
"Over the last few months, Ren has been terrorized by a band of bandits led by one Grawnem Draft," Chesham explains. "However, we have recently discovered the location of their hideout--Bandit's Cave, a small cavern about a day's walk from here. While their numbers are estimated at 15 men or so, they don't know we've found them out, giving us the advantage. I will pay you, collectively, 200 gold pieces for Draft's head, and 400 for the man himself as a prisoner--"
"A price I still maintain is exorbitant, my lord," Menlo interrupts.
"A small price to pay for the security of Ren. Are you all interested in this endeavor?"

"I am interested, my lord," Daos replies. "But is there anything you can tell us about this Grawnem Draft and his bandits. What has led them to turn to banditry in the first place?"

The younger of the two brothers shrugs. "The terms seem acceptable though the numbers seem a little... small and hard to divide compared to say 240gp for the head and 480gp alive. After all, when you have six experienced and intrepid adventurers on the cases." Flynn does his best to sound experienced and as if he, and by proxy, the group, has done this before.
--------------- OOC: Didn't want to roll all willy-nilly without the DM asking for it. +7 to Persuasion or Deception or Both as the DM sees fit. Feel free to roll for Flynn or I can.

Aerendyl vaer Tharandiir, Paladin of BahamutHP: 12 of 12 | AC: 15 | Perception: 12 | Insight: 12 | Inspiration: 0 Conditions: None.Aeryn nodded towards the Mayor, noting the man had, at the least, a rein on his ego. It was useful to nettle those in power, to determine the manner in which they wielded that power. "I will leave the bartering of coins to those more qualified than myself. What does concern me is the request for the man's capture, what is to be done with him should we return with him and turn him over to your custody?"

The Mayor gives an indignant grunt. "You mean, besides the opportunity? Parsall's never been strong enough to defend against bandits, and the King's Royal Army won't send assistance unless they think Foccuopolis will be threatened. Perhaps there was some particular event that turned him to banditry, perhaps not. But I was a schoolteacher for many years before being elected. Even from a young age, Draft was a brute and a bully. As for your question," Chesham says, turning to Aerendyl. "He will be held trial for his crimes, almost undoubtedly be found guilty, and be sentenced to 10 years in prison for every 100 gold pieces stolen--although with the amount he's pillaged, that amounts to a life sentence."
When he hears Flynn's proposal, he smiles sadly and shakes his head. "I'm afraid 400 gold is all we can pay without near-bankrupting the fine town of Ren. I may, however, be able to afford a little extra if you kill Grawnem but capture all his men."

"You want him dead, my lord?" Daos asks in response to the mayor's offer to pay more if kill Draft but bring his men in alive. He tries to keep his voice neutral, as he is in information gathering mode. He wonders if perhaps there is something more personal at play here.

And that raises another point, of course. You say the pay is greater if we return them alive, but him dead. If we are able to bring the miscreant himself to face justice, what do you want done with his followers?

Chesham looks at Daos and Alonzo in disgust and confusion. "What? No! Whatever gave you that idea?!"
Menlo leans over and says "Your offer of a bonus could be...misconstrued, milord."
"What? Oh, yes, of course. No, I meant that, if you were forced to kill Draft but captured all his men, I could pay a little more than the 200 initially offered." To Qurrak, he nods solemnly. "I am afraid I am rather ignorant of Minotaur culture, but I will gladly provide you with an alternative reward. A medal, perhaps?"
"A medal," Menlo explains. "Is an engraved circle of precious metal, usually worn around the neck, that serves as a mark of honor."

Flynn rubs his beard, giving the appearance that he is making calculations or weighting options. Truth be told his is sold.
"Any information you can provide on specific whereabouts would be useful. But, I see no reason not to accept your terms."

"To the northwest," the mayor says in response to Daos. He gestures towards Aerendyl, Snow-Fall, and Alonzo. "Will you three accept the job?" he asks.
Snow-Fall shrugs. "I'll consider it," he says as he strolls out of the town hall.
