Daos casts Magic Missile on the Displacer Beast for 4 force damage.
Is this a typo, or does it resist force damage? That's just a typo, sorry.

Okay, since Caelynn hit it that should disrupt its displacement until its turn, right? In that case, Val will crit it on her turn, so I edited in an extra damage roll for her.

I admit, this is a bit of an awkward place to end the chapter, but there were a few changes of plans which sneaked up on me. The adventure in the Grand Academy was supposed to be the whole chapter, but then it ended a lot sooner than I expected. So I was going to fit the Cryfopolis adventure in chapter 5, but I ended up filling the rest of the chapter length with sidequests. Whoops!

Was there more to do at the Grand Academy? Daos wanted to track down and interrogate Trite's dormmate, but the others shot that down pretty thoroughly.

CHAPTER NOTES:
More To Do At The Academy:
While there wasn't really any more quests at the academy, besides interrogating Tympany's dormmate, there were lots of places to go and people to talk to, like the professors. I came up with a professor for each school of magic, like a flamboyant Tiefling for Enchantment, and a grumpy war veteran Elf for Evocation. One of them even had a link to Daos' backstory.
The Fireproof Trolls:
I'm deeply sorry for these. I keep wanting to make Fireproof trolls happen--I ran them for my IRL group, and they hated it. I thought maybe I just didn't have the right group, so I ran them here, too. Once again, it made the encounters frustratingly difficult instead of interestingly difficult. So, I cut out the last troll encounter I had planned. Sorry, again.
Meine's "Death":
As you may have noticed, Meine got a 1 on one of her death saves and, well, died. I didn't know what to do, at first. I didn't want to judge fudge it so she lived. It's already hard enough to face serious consequences in 5E without me cheating. But at the same time, a death like that would hijack the story right before the main plot (gathering the artifacts to close the Mouth) was introduced. Plus, it wasn't like if Valerie died, which would just be sad. Meine's a princess, the princess of the realm you're working for. If she died, it wouldn't make sense for the King to just say, "Oh, how sad, moving on."
So, I changed Valerie's action to stabilizing her. She gets off lightly with a missing eye--she doesn't even get removed as a companion, because Daos rolled a natural 20. (You would only have lost her permanently if you rolled really low, though. A success would have meant she misses this mission in Cryfopolis, but the King calms down and lets her go on the next quest.) But consider this your only warning! I'm not going to step in to save another companion.

Yeah, as long as Meine travels with us, there's always a chance she'll be killed. Especially as she's our only tank/front-liner (the rest of the party being two wizards and two rogues), and is lower level than us. And we have no healer. So honestly, her odds are not great. But anyway, it's probably a good idea to have some contingencies in mind for how to deal with that if/when it happens, because Daos spending the rest of the game in the dungeon will kind of bring the game to a screeching halt, obviously.
Now that Daos can use third level spells, I wonder how feasible it would be to translate Daos' Cold Shoulder to 5E. If I can dig it up again. It was one of his favorite spells, way back in the day.

I'm not feeling hugely concerned, because it's already hard to die in 5E, this is a relatively easy game combat-wise, and I'm a pretty lenient DM. e.g., enemies won't attack downed party members unless they have a specific goal to kill that party member. If you take care to protect Meine and stabilize her when she falls, you should be fine. But I'll keep some backup plans for the story in mind, just in case.
I didn't know you made your own homebrew spell! What does it do?

The problem with stabilizing in the middle of battle is that none of us have magical healing, so we'd need to pass a medicine check. And assuming Meine fell on the front line, which is logical, anyone trying to do so is leaving themselves open to attack; and we're all pretty squishy. That's why Daos didn't rush to stabilize her in the troll fight; he would have fallen really quickly, as well.
I found the old spell. It was pretty situational and kind of dangerous to use since it required you to get close to enemies (or be surrounded by them already).

That seems pretty easy to translate.
Daos' Cold Shoulder 3rd-Level Alteration Casting Time: 1 Action Range: Self (10-ft radius) Target: Self (10-ft radius) Components: V, S, M (the tongue of an Ice Toad) Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
You create an aura of extreme cold which radiates from your body up to a distance of 10 ft. When a creature enters the area for the first time or starts its turn there, it must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 3d10 cold damage. On a successful save, it takes half as much. In addition, you gain immunity to Cold damage for the spell's duration.

Sounds good. I'm not sure how spell research works in 5E, but maybe if/when Daos gets any coin and access to a library, he can try researching it and adding it to his repertoire.

"I realize this is kind of my thing, but could we all pitch in a little?" Caelynn asks. What, seriously? Even though Caelynn has more gold than Daos does?

I couldn't find my character sheet for nothing when I posted, so I fixed the post.

Do we have any idea where the first death took place?
