Daos also has a very confused look on his face. Did an assassination attempt just occur right in front of him? Why target this woman, and not the king then? Or did the assassin miss? He gets to his feet, not sure if he should help in chasing the would-be assassin down or remain to protect the king in case of another attack. "Are you alright? Your neck!" Daos says to Miss Serpentine, pointing to the dart sticking out of her.

"Ah, yes, the dart," she says, more annoyed than anything else. She pull it out and examines it. "Yes, definitely poisoned."
"Shouldn't you be getting to a healer, Miss Serpentine?" the king says.
"Magical protection from poison is very useful to have when you're the target of an assassin," she says. In a hushed tone, she adds, "The question is, is this because of the barrier, or in spite of it?"
"Are you sure you should talking about that in front of..." He gestures to Daos.
"Yes, I am."

"Barrier? You know this was going to happen?" Daos tries to follow the conversation as best he can, but he's clearly missing a few vital pieces of information.

"Barrier? You know this was going to happen?" Daos tries to follow the conversation as best he can, but he's clearly missing a few vital pieces of information. "This is the third assassination attempt on me in the last month," Miss Serpentine says. "Thankfully, whoever wants me dead clearly picked the worst person for the job. Of course, the real question is whether they wish to release demons onto Foccu, or if that is simply deemed a necessary risk for getting myself out of the picture."

Sadly, the woman's explanation seems to raise more questions than it answers. "Demons? And why you?"

Sadly, the woman's explanation seems to raise more questions than it answers. "Demons? And why you?" "As advisor to the King of Foccu, the high security placed on me is much less suspicious than, say, a politically unimportant wizard," Miss Serpentine explains. "Thus, it provides an extra level of confidentiality as to who the barrier is linked to." "Confidentiality you seem to compromise at every turn," the king grumbles. "Watch your tongue, Leonard," she reprimands. "And anyhow, I hope I should not have to explain how the demon-filled wasteland next door came to be. To your minotaur friend, perhaps, but you seem a knowledgeable sort."

"I know the story of Ozymandias," Daos agrees. "He opened a portal to the depths and destroyed his nation as a result."

"I know the story of Ozymandias," Daos agrees. "He opened a portal to the depths and destroyed his nation as a result." "Yes, the portals allows fiends to come through into the mortal realm as they please," Miss Serpentine says. "And do you know why they don't simply charge into Foccu and destroy it, as well?"

"The barrier you mentioned?" Daos asks. He recalls that raving madman back in Capritol mentioning a barrier breaking. Was that what he meant?

"The barrier you mentioned?" Daos asks. He recalls that raving madman back in Capritol mentioning a barrier breaking. Was that what he meant? "Precisely," she says. "That barrier is tied to me, so if I die, it dissipates. As I said before, the question is, whether this assassination is meant to allow demons into Foccu, or if that is simply an unfortunate side effect."

Unfortunately, this really raises more questions than it answers, and Daos momentarily falls silent as he tries to process them all. Why is the barrier tied to this woman's life? Why is she not hidden away where no one could ever find her, but instead standing next to the most powerful man in the nation, making her a huge target? Why would anyone try and kill her if it means bringing down the barrier and dooming the entire world?
He looks helplessly to Qurrak, but the minotaur does not appear to have any more answers than he does. With so many questions on his lips, he finally settles on one in particular: "Why tell us all of this?"

Qurrak zoned off. To him this matron figure, seemed like a normal matron. From his exprience with such women, the easiest way to deal with them is to shut up and nod. But to listen enough, so if his attention is questioned he could answer in a statifying way.
His ears perks up. "Should we protect the matron and the king,or join the chase?" Hs ask Daos as he raise his shields.

"Forgive me for being presumptuous, but I know an adventurer when I see one," Miss Serpentine says. "And in my experience, a nonstandard situation always benefits from the assistance of an adventurer or two. In fact, I've been building up a small group of them, to act as agents in the following investigation. Interested?"
To Qurrak, she says "Oh, go on and chase the assassin. I assure you, I can protect myself."

"Should we protect the matron and the king,or join the chase?" Hs ask Daos as he raise his shields. Daos wondered why the minotaur was looking to him for an answer, but then remembered the two of them were all that remained. The tabaxi, the knight, the dwarf, the strange elf, and the brothers had all left. "You go ahead," he answers. "I'll remain here and learn more, and make sure no one else attacks in the meantime." "In fact, I've been building up a small group of them, to act as agents in the following investigation. Interested?" "Considering the stakes, I'd have to say yes," Daos says. "If those demons are released, untold thousands will suffer and die. What can we do?"

"If those demons are released, untold thousands will suffer and die. What can we do?" "Presuming the assassin does not evade capture," Miss Serpentine says, before a guard enters the room. "Your majesty, the assassin has been apprehended, and has been taken to the dungeons for questioning." "Excellent timing," Miss Serpentine says. "The first step is to get as much information out of this fellow as we can, before he is turned over to the gallows. Then, the investigation can begin in earnest."
