Qurrak nod. This seemed like a good chance for glory! He roared, and started to run after the assasian.

Qurrak nod. This seemed like a good chance for glory! He roared, and started to run after the assasian. "Excuse me, Sir Minotaur? They've already been caught."

"Will you be leading the interrogation?" Daos asks Miss Serpentine.

"Will you be leading the interrogation?" Daos asks Miss Serpentine. "That is my intention. Come along," she says, gesturing for Daos to follow her. King Leonard sighs as she leaves the throne room.

"R-Right," Daos says. He bows to the king, then follows after her. Perhaps he might get some answers now.

Miss Serpentine leads Daos and Qurrak out of the throne room and down a spiral staircase, into a rather picturesque dungeon.
"The assassin has been moved into the interrogation room, Miss Serpentine," one of the guards says. The prisoners fall into a stony, terrified silence as she walks past.
"It's not as sinister as it sounds, I assure you," she says, opening the door. The interrogation room is dark--pitch black, until Miss Serpentine snaps her fingers, and a small orb of light begins to hover over a plain table. A prisoner--the assassin--sits handcuffed on the other side. If a snake and a weasel had a baby, and that baby was a human, it would be this man. He shows no fear or discomfort in his compromising situation.
"If you try to escape, you will be killed where you stand," Miss Serpentine threatens. He shrugs.

Daos observes the man carefully. He seemed rather non-nonchalant about things. Which meant he probably would not talk. And he either believes he is going to be freed or he doesn't care about his own life. Either way, it was disquieting. Still, perhaps some information could be gleamed, if asked in the right way.
"You don't seem terribly worried," Daos says to the assassin. "If I had been caught trying to assassinate the king, I'd be a little nervous myself. That's not the sort of thing one gets a petty fine for, you know."

Daos can tell that he's projecting a mask of confidence to some degree, but he clearly is less worried than he probably should be.
"For one thing, you need me alive," he says. "You don't know anything about this attack--who wants who dead, and why. You need me. I can't tell you anything useful if I'm dead."
"You can with a Cleric," Serpentine says.
"How cooperative do you think I'll be?"
She glares at him and sticks the dart in his forehead.
"OW! Hey!"
"The poison was Dragon's Blood--but not 'Dragon's Blood,' the artificial type they sell in seedy shops. This was DRAGON'S. BLOOD." Serpentine draws him close. "Green Dragon's Blood. Would you like to explain how you got access to the blood of an extinct creature?!"
The assassin's confident façade vanishes.

Daos also notes that the man did not contradict him when he accused him of trying to assassinate the king. That seems to suggest the king was his target, and he was not deliberately trying to bring down the barrier.
For now, the wizard tries to be direct. "What is it, exactly, that you want?"

"Look, I'm just...I'm just an agent!" he stammers. "I don't know who, or why, I just do!"
Serpentine glares at him. "...is that 'agent' with a capital A, perchance?"
He looks at her in shock and fear.
"You're not going to answer me?"
He makes no response.
"I thought not. He's Night's Breath--which would explain the Dragon's Blood," Serpentine says, pacing around the room.
"How did you--" the assassin sputters. He clasps his hand to his mouth.
Miss Serpentine pats Daos on the shoulder. "I'll call for a Cleric. Ask him whatever you wish in the meantime--but don't push. Whatever he refuses to say, he probably can't, if he values his life."
She leaves the room. Daos and Qurrak are now alone with the assassin.

"It must have been quite an offer then," Daos speculates. "Just how much is the life of the king worth?" The assassin laughs. "Hell if I know. But the life of Selena Serpentine? It was worth my life, apparently. The guys I work for, you don't get paid. And you don't get a choice."

So he was after Serpentine then. That probably doesn't bode well, Daos thinks to himself. "Why her? And what do they have on you that they could force you to throw your own life away like that? And for that matter, who are 'they' in the first place?"
