Daos I could have sworn there was a rule in AD&D that reading another mage's spell book for the first time requires read magic. Or am I misremembering? I'm wondering because it occurred to me that Damien's journal might also be his spell book.
Bonus question Peddywinkle mentioned at this at the start of the quest: What's the public reputation of the Hosttower like in your game? I seem to recall that in most published materials it's a hardly a secret that the mages belonging to the Hosttower are an unpleasant bunch, but perhaps that's all intended to be DM only information?

Generally speaking, anything written in magic needs Read Magic to decode, including spellbooks. As for the Hosttower, Malavar is neither a wizard or a local of Luskan, so he probably knows less than most. According to the wiki, the Arcane Brotherhood "was shrouded in mystery, as even its most high-ranking members were unknown. It was known however that their primary goal was the political and economic control of the North." So he'd know they were made up of wizards and were quite powerful (both magically and politically). Probably not much more than that. Taska might know something more, as she is from Luskan.

New day, new spells. Malavar picks 3x CLW and will cast them on Jaxle and Krah first. Once they're fully healed or at least at 75% HP or better he'll switch to Drezden.

Malavar picks Cure Light Wounds, Detect Magic and Protection from Evil. Before entering the inn to meet with Peddywinkle he'll cast both Detect Magic and Protection from Evil (yes, I've played too much Shadowrun/Cyberpunk, why do you ask?)
Before we head into Targos, we should also decide whether to cut out the lich potion recipe from the book or not. Assuming of course that Dallion hasn't discovered any more nastiness in there.

Further reading of the tome reveals nothing further worth noting. In addition, any attempt to damage the book fails. The pages cannot be torn, cut or even burned. Some kind of magic protects the book from any damage of any kind.

How deeply does Malavar have to concentrate to use detect magic? I assume carrying on a conversation with Peddywinkle at the same time would be out of the question. Could he use the spell and not seem too weird if someone else is talking to Peddywinkle while Malavar scans him?

Yeah, if he lets someone else do the talking, he can scan easily enough. If anyone looks at him, it will just seem like Malavar is really focused on what's being said.

How well known are the Harpers in your game? Is it likely our characters would know about Harper pins, for instance? Is it likely any of us would ever have met a Harper?
