Most Sea elves are very striking in appearance, with skin that ranges between a light blue to a dark green. They usually have black hair and their eyes are oddly colored, ranging from an iridescent blue to gold to a white-silver hue that shines like mother-of-pearl. Their hands and feet are webbed and they boast a set of gills that runs along their collarbones and down their ribcages.
Sha'al: Appearance
Sha'al's kin is dark blue-green with small accent highlights of orange to red in places. A black tattoo of a highly stylized crashing wave climbs down his left arm from shoulder to elbow, curling tumultuously around an unrecognizable symbol. He will practically never speak of the true nature of the symbol. His body is toned and lithe from his physical work, and his reflexes agile from his Elven heritage and years at sea. His hair is mostly black with tinges of deep green and red at the sides of his temples and the tips. Metallic Silver green eyes.
Attitude:
Though fairly attractive, Sha'al has an off-putting personality. He is more used to harsh or crass language and behavior than the graces of polite society. He understands the value of cooperating to see a job through but sarcasm, scorn, snide remarks and apathy are second nature.
Sardonic, reckless, something to prove. Given to bouts of apathy, depression and isolationist tendencies.
Background:
Sha'al was born in secret, but shortly afterwards his mother brought them to a nearby Dimernesti community that took them in. He never knew his father, whom his mother said had died before he was born. As a young sea elf, he had somewhat unusual coloring. The typical green and blue was tinged with red and orange highlights… Not impossible, but uncommon. He was assured that he would grow out of such colorations as he got on in years. During his adolescence, he became more and more brash and adventurous; often to the distress of his mother. Society tended to regard him with a critical eye and little to no leniency for misdeeds; no matter how slight.
Eventually it became clear that the red and orange streaks in his skin were permanent, as he grew into young adulthood. It was then that he first began to hear whispers of "Mahkwahb". Gradually the oppression from his neighbors grew more and more blatant and cruel; and even his few close friends began to distance themselves. Eventually he learned the truth of his heritage from his mother, and that his father might be alive. Enraged he argued with her violently and stormed out. Roaming for several days he eventually returned to find her dead from sorrow and heart failure. Incensed at the community and situation, and feeling somewhat responsible, he began vandalizing and damaging property of those who had been cruel to them; even going so far as to physically assault a male Dimernesti who had been particularly harsh to his mother. He was quickly banished from the only home he had ever known, and his mother's body unceremoniously dumped in some undersea chasm to 'return to nature'.
Depressed and disgusted with his own kind, he set out alone and made a subsistence living in the unpopulated places in the sea for more than a year. Eventually boredom and loneliness drove him to seek out other intelligent life, though he largely eschewed contact with other sea elves; except when absolutely necessary. More comfortable near open water, he made his way to port cities and fell in with seafaring people. Due to his natural abilities and knowledge of the sea, he became a valued crew member on a local merchant vessel. Over the course of several years he hired out to various crews, some less than reputable. He became prone to periodic bouts of depression or restlessness, often taking his earnings and disappearing for days or weeks at a time. These cycles typically consisted of heavy drinking, underground gambling and fighting, and generally self-destructive behavior. [/spoiler]
