"Well, working in the stables is better than nothing," Sonoma said. She seemed to take the whole thing in stride. "And once I make enough money doing that, I can hopefully clean myself up, get a new dress, some new shoes, and maybe even a promotion into something else than a stable hand."

"Ah, you hear that? Now there's a driven young woman. If only Chevis was so determined," the pregnant woman said.
"Aye, aye, so it is, Lyla. You could learn something from that kind of attitude, Hoyt," Seth said to the young man with the broom. Hoyt rolled his eyes at the comment.
"Cleaning the stables pays five pennies a day," Seth says. "You can start tomorrow, if you like. I'll have Hoyt show you what to do."

Sonoma couldn't help but smile at the praise. "Okay, I think I can handle that," she admits. "Thank you again, Mr. Seth. Oh, and it was nice to meet both of you ladies," she says to the women.

"Lyla Redtrout," the pregnant woman says, extending a hand to Sonoma. "Good luck in your new job."
"I should be getting back to the shop," Harriet says, standing up and handing Seth a few coins.
"Yeah, I better get back and check on my kids. By which I mean my husband and son," Lyla snickers. She also hands Seth a few coins to pay for her meal.
"Have a good day then, ladies," Seth says cheerfully.

Sonoma takes a minute to shake Lyla's hand before she leaves. "Thanks," she adds. She glances around the inn for a moment. "Well, I guess I'll be here nice and early tomorrow then. I'll see you then," she says before she walks out of the inn.
Despite the fact it is cold, she continues down the path she was taking before she stopped at the inn.

Pressing on, Sonoma came across a bridge spanning the frozen river. She spotted a grey-haired hobbit crossing it, heading south, the same direction she was taking. Because of her long legs, she was able to catch up with the hobbit and recognized her as Hilda.
Beyond the bridge, she saw some kind of military barracks, a couple of houses, and a farm up ahead.

"Oh, Mother...uh Montajay," Sonoma says as she catches up to the hobbit woman. "I'm glad I ran into you. You left in such a hurry yesterday that I didn't even get the chance to ask where the temple was."

Hilda pauses and turns to Sonoma. "Oh, it's you. The young woman Chevis found. Sonoma, was it? I was just heading to the temple now, actually, if you'd like to come along."

"That would be great. It's kind of cold out here," Sonoma said with a light chuckle. "Um, I would hate to be a bother, but there isn't any way you would let me stay at the temple would you?" she asks innocent. "It is just that Chevis doesn't really seem to want me around, and that kind of bothers me."

Hilda chuckles darkly as they pass by the barracks. "I'm afraid the only rooms we have available are for acolytes in training. Unless you are asking to become a sister, I'm afraid we don't have much in accommodations. At least with Chevis, you have a bed to sleep in and," she adds, glancing to the human's feet, "boots to wear. At the temple, you'd be sleeping on the floor in the infirmary."

"I guess that means I'm stuck there for awhile," Sonoma said with a sigh. "Well, I can handle it I guess. It is only until I start making my own living at least."

After passing the houses and the farm, they come to the temple. "Ah, here we are," Hilda says. "Well, if you should need me for anything else, here is where you can find me most of the time."
Further down the road is another farm, then a large house. By far, it's the biggest house she's seen in Buho. Pointing to the large house, Hilda says, "That is where I live, should I not be in the temple. I prefer not to be bothered at home, though, unless it's very important."

Sonoma looked over the temple and then turned her attention to the large house. Her eyes widened at the sight. ~Why couldn't I stay there?~ she asked herself. Though, she knew the answer. Hilda didn't want to take responsibility for her just like Chevis didn't want to take responsibility for her. It was a discouraging thought when the town priestess didn't really want to help some nameless girl.
Realizing that she had been standing there just staring at the house in silence, Sonoma decided to speak. "Uh, right," Sonoma said. "Well, I think I should get back to Chevis' home. It is kind of cold out here," she said with a small smile. "I'll see you later," she add as she turned to head back to her temporary home.

Continuing down around the lake, Sonoma eventually returned to where she started--Chevis' house. By now, a few hours have passed, and it's sometime after noon.
Stepping inside, she finds that Chevis is now awake finally. He is sitting by the fire, a bottle in his hand, trying to stay warm. "Oh, you came back," he says upon noticing her return. "I was wondering where you ran off to."

Sonoma closed the door behind her and gently took of Chevis' boots. She wanted to prove that she was trying to take care of them (even though it was hard to tell considering how out of shape they were anyway). "I went into town, to sort of get a feel of the place," she explained. "And I got a job too."
