~He can't be much older than me, but he wants me to call him sir,~ Sonoma thought to herself. Despite the fact that she didn't much like the treatment, she just rolled with it. "Yes...sir," she says.
She took the shovel, and dragged it along as she walked out back. Hoyt wasn't exactly specific in where she was suppose to dig this hole, but she figured it really didn't matter. She started digging the hole like she was told.

Sonoma spent several hours digging and then burying the manure. Despite the cold, this was tiring and sweaty work. It was also exhausting. While Sonoma could not remember her past, she felt she had never worked this hard before in her life. Hoyt watched her for only about ten minutes, then went inside to attend to his own duties.
At one point, her back aching and her arms and legs sore, she slipped and landed in the horse manure pit. She was thankful at least that Hoyt had not seen this. However, she was now covered in horse manure and stank to high heaven.

Sonoma looked down at herself, and let out a depressing sigh. "Great," she muttered. Things just didn't seem to be going her way. That didn't stop her from getting up and trying to finish the job she was suppose to do though. She couldn't do anything about the smell just yet, but she was thinking about what she could do about it.

After another hour of work, she finished burying the manure. It was sometime in the afternoon now, and her stomach rumbled from not eating yet. She now needed to report to Hoyt, although she could only imagine how he'd react if he saw her now.

After all the work, Sonoma didn't feel as cold anymore. She let out another depressing sigh before she walked back into the stables. She was not looking forward to this reaction. Her head was all ready bent down, and she continued to drag the shovel along with her as she walked. "...I'm finished, sir," she said softly, bracing herself for what was to come.

Hoyt had been brushing one of the ponies when she approached. He turned to her about to say something, but instead shouted, "Holy crap! You reek!" He put a hand to his face and waved his other hand in her direction, as if trying to physically push away the smell.
"Are you...are you covered in it?" He barks with derisive laughter. "You were supposed to bury it, not going swimming in it! Is that some kind of weird tribal ritual or something?" He continues laughing.

"No. I fell," Sonoma said, trying to explain herself. "I guess I'm just not use to doing this kind of work," she admitted with a shrug. "It just means that I'm going to need a bath...and a fresh pair of clothes."

"You can do that on your own time," Seth said. "But you're not done yet. Your next task is to clean the stables themselves, now that the manure is gone." He stepped out of the stall he was in and pointed out a bucket with a rag in it. "Use that," he explained. "Clean the free stalls, including the walls and floors. When you finish, you can collect your pay from my father."

Sonoma picked up the bucket and rag, and walked over to one of the free stalls to clean. She didn't even bother saying anything to Hoyt because she was embarrassed enough as it was. She refused to think that things wouldn't get better. They had to get better at some point, or so she hoped.

Sonoma spent another several hours working on cleaning the stables. Again, unused to such hard work, this was very exhausting for her. It took her until almost nightfall to finish, and by then she was so sore she felt she could barely move at all.

Sonoma just sat on the floor for a few minutes because she just didn't want to move. The very idea that she had to walk back to Chevis' home was exhausting. She forced herself to stand up, and she slowly walked to the inn to collect her money from Seth. This was going to be another embarrassing moment, she could just feel it.

The inn was much busier than the last time she was here, as it was evening now and people were coming in for supper and visitors who were passing by were stopping for the night.
At one of the hobbit sized tables were two halflings in bronze armor. They were probably outriders, and those ponies in the stalls might have belonged to them.
At the bar was Lyla, the pregnant woman, chatting with Seth. A delicious smelling dinner was sitting before her.
There were also two men Sonoma did not recognize sitting at another table, chatting with each other and drinking ale. From their peasant garbs, she suspected they were farmers or fishermen.
As she walked to the bar, all eyes soon turned to her, and more than a few people made an unpleasant face once they got a whiff of her.
When she reached the bar, Lyla turned to face her and smiled. The smile quickly turned into a slightly ill look. "Oh, goodness child...you sure worked hard today, didn't you?"
Seth looks a little embarrassed by the whole scene. He clears his throat and silently hands her five copper. "You can have tomorrow off, as it's Lightday," he says. "Go on home now."

Sonoma looked down at the five coppers in her hand. It just didn't seem like a whole lot to her. She looked to Lyla with the most pathetic face she had ever given anyone. Of course, her eyes couldn't help but wander towards the food that was sitting in front of her. It smelt so good! "Mr. Firesnake, sir, how much would it be for a bath?" she asked, sounding so very small.

Seth flushed slightly, as all eyes had turned to him now. "Well, uh...baths cost three pennies," he says. That was 3/5 of the money she had earned just today!

Sonoma looked down at the miserable amount of money that she had made. She was hungry, but if she didn't clean up she wouldn't get anything to eat at all simply because no one was going to give her the time of day. With a sigh, she counted out 3 pennies and handed them to Seth quietly. What else was there to say on the matter?
"Now, if only I could get some clean clothes," she said softly.
