As Xanatos would say, 'Revenge is a sucker's game.' All Nezznar wanted was the wealth of the mine and the power of the spell forge, so he could create a powerful army and invade the surface. The party did become quite a thorn in his side, but if they were willing to just walk away...he still got what he wanted in the end. It wasn't worth the risk of fighting if he could get what he wanted without it.
