"Yes...please, tell us of these 'answers' you're seeking, tiefling," Djandaar prods in a silky susurrus of a voice. There's a note of skepticism, almost mocking, in his tone -- but for the first time he seems genuinely interested in what the others are saying.

As the group waits for Kalli, they come around a bend in Triboar Trail and spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side. ============== Map below (click to enlarge). Assume each square is 5 feet in size.

Fosco catches a glimpse of the fallen horses in the distance, and feels a pang of pity for the poor creatures. He privately wonders who could have assaulted them, and whether or not he should be wary of them.

As the horse corpses come into view, Djandaar suddenly comes to a halt and raises a hand to signal for the caravan to do likewise. Once Fosco has managed to bestill the oxen, Djandaar listens intently for any hint of where those black-feathered arrows might have been fired from, glancing into the thicket on either side as if expecting an ambush to leap out from them at any moment.
If he can discern no sign of any hostile presence, he'll slowly walk towards the dead horses until he's thirty feet away, then cast Mage Hand and use the spectral appendage to pluck one of the arrows from where it's embedded and carry it to him. Then he'll feel the arrow's bloody tip to try to infer how long it's been since these creatures were killed.

Orianna pulls out her short bow as Djandaar looks over the scene. She looks around from her position for a possible ambush.

The wagon comes to a stop and a tense silence descends on the group as Djan looks from side to side at the brush. The dragonborn hears nothing, sees nothing out of the ordinary. Quite confident that he is safe, he walks closer until he's about 30 feet away from the dead horses. Using a minor spell, he summons forth a spectral, disembodied hand and mentally sends it to pull one of the arrows out of the horses and bring it to him.
He examines the arrow, but there is no way to tell how long ago the horses died by inspecting the arrow itself. He'll need to inspect the horses instead.
Orianna glances around the area for possible places an ambush could be set. But really, an ambush could be set just about anywhere in this area. There is plenty of places in the woods on either side to hide.

Djandaar walks slowly forward and approaches the fallen horses. His eyes, however, do not sink down to examine the dead beasts of burden, but continue methodically scanning the surrounding vegetation. "Pathetic highwaymen!" he suddenly shouts into the trees. "No one but a desperate fool would employ such a dimwitted ruse. Come out and surrender, and we will take pity on you and spare your lives!" He stands there towering over the corpses with arms outstretched and clawed hands upturned, inviting whoever may be listening to make the next move.

There is a few moments of dead silence after Djan's challenge. The dragonborn then suddenly hears something whiz past his ear from the northeast. Before he can even react, an arrow strikes him from the southeast, knocking him flat on his back. He has a vague notion of shouting and the clash of steel, but then everything goes black. Before any of the others can react, two goblins emerge from the brush, one on either side of the wagon. They are armed with scimitars, shields and leather armor. One slashes at Orianna, cutting her badly. The other goes for Iroas, but the cleric's chain armor protects him from the blow. ============= Goblins' stealth check (1d20+6): 20+6 = 26. Shaking off the shock of what just happened, Iroas swings his mace at his opponent, but she blocks with her shield. "Goblins!" he calls, a warning that comes far too late to do anyone any good. Orianna tries to shoot her bow at the goblin that just attacked her, but at this range doing so is no easy task. The arrow has no momentum and just bounces off the goblin's leather shirt without even scratching it. The goblins hiding in the brush shoot again, this time at Fosco. One arrow hits the halfling in the shoulder, his leather armor absorbing the worst of it. The second flies just over his head, missing it by inches, and hits with a thunk one of the boxes in the back of the wagon. At the same time, the scimitar goblins slash at Orianna and Iroas, respectively. But both are able to evade or block the attacks. Fosco whips out his flute and begins playing a somber, slow tune. It may seem an inappropriate time for music, but a magical aura surrounds him as he plays the lullaby. The energy coalesces and then flies forward, encompassing a small dome centered on the fallen dragonborn. The arrows stop flying from the brush immediately after. Finally, Kalli tries to aid Orianna by firing her bow, but it's a wide shot that just winds up flying into the brush. =============== Initiative Order1. Iroas (18) 2. Orianna (15) 3.
