"I'm willin to bet the last gold in my purse that the victim knows just as much as the mage if he knew to anticipate trouble and send for backup. But fine. We'll try it your way first, with the understanding that I'll make the mage a foot shorter if it's the difference between a clean job and one where one of us gets hurt." When she says 'a food shorter' she holds her own hand up at neck height, to make it clear she's talking about a beheading. “Chopping off his feet would be a good way of keeping him from escaping,” Hun-Lek says, misunderstanding Bayla, “but I think that killing him is a safer option.” ”No,” Frun-Wok rebuts. “Kill only as a last resort; that is the Lun-Chu way.” Gel-Thrak nods in agreement and turns to Melvin, who had started counting his gold with a glazed expression. “How about you, Melvin? Should we kill-“ ”Kill’em,” he answers. Nobody is sure if he was aware of the previous discussion.

"If you don't mind my asking, why is it the Lun-Chu way? I've always been curious as to why that particular tribe behaves so differently from their brethren," Daos brings up.

"Can we talk while we walk?" Bayla gruffs.

"Can we talk while we walk?" Bayla gruffs. “Right, right, of course,” Frun-Wok says. He starts walking in the direction the group was headed, and Quentin, Jonas, and the other Orcs follow behind him.

The conversation derailed, Daos silently walks on.

"Answer the elf's question" Bayla demands as the group starts walking.
Not that she really cared, but he seemed to.

"Well, I suppose it has to do with our roots. You see, about half of the orcs in Sen-Tok were banished there after the king ordered everybody out. Most of them were angry at Grestin and wanted to become marauders against them. But Lun-Chu, our founder, disagreed. He said that we wouldn't demonstrate the very actions that they banished others from. A bunch of other orcs went along with him. But since farming is pretty much impossible in Sen-Tok, they had to raid towns, or else starve to death. He did insist on laying out a strict code, which we follow to this day."

Bayla grunts her disapproval, but looks sideways at Daos to make sure he seems satisfied with the answer.

"It really does seem like that the banishment of the orcs and goblins to Sentok was meant as a slow death sentence," Daos agrees. "It's a testament to your peoples' resilience and determination that they've survived this long in spite of that. Did this nameless human mage that took over your tribe offer your people some way out of that predicament to gain their trust?"

Did this nameless human mage that took over your tribe offer your people some way out of that predicament to gain their trust?" “Yeah, actually. He said he would help us drive away the Grestinian “oppressors” and reclaim the land that was “rightfully ours”. That sounded off a lot of red flags for us traditionalists.”

Bayla doesn't say a word.
She's not one predisposed to get lost in thought, but that's exactly what seems to have happened.

"I wonder, though, what this human mage's true intentions are," Daos muses. "What does he stand to gain from an all out war?"

"I wonder, though, what this human mage's true intentions are," Daos muses. "What does he stand to gain from an all out war?" "Mages fight mages" Bayla replies with a sense of finality, as if that entirely answers Daos's question.

Daos arches a brow. "Despite being a mage myself, I have to admit, I have no idea what you mean by that."

Bayla waves a hand.
"Mages fight mages" she repeats. "Over, ya know, books and trinkets and places where books might be."
"Fight each other and study. That's pretty much all mages do. Only I don't see how having an army of orcs is going to help him study, you know? So I figure the army is there to help him fight another mage."
