CH. 13 - Climbing the Ladder

Both combatants are quite exhausted, and it shows.  They circle each other, looking for a drop in defense.  Suddenly, both strike out at once.  And both connect.  Ladonna strikes the dwarf in the head with her staff, just as he hits her in the chest with his mace.  They both stumble, and Ladonna falls to her knees.  However, Oskibor hits the ground, knocked out.

"Kohen Oskibor Ramot is unable to battle!  That means the winner is Ladonna the Liar!" the herald announces, sounding about as surprised as anyone else.

Healers approach and get both of them back on their feet.

Ladonna looks shocked as she stands up. Once Osikbar is healed, she says. "That was surprising, but good fight," she says.

Lillian claps and cheers enthusiastically for Ladonna. As boring as some of the fights may be, she plans to stay and cheer for her friend as long as she's in the running.

"Ah, I knew I should have healed myself, but I wanted to save them for a later match," Oskibor admits.  He shrugs it off, and goes to sit down.

A servant approaches Ladonna with another sack of gold--another 300 GP for winning her second match.

"That ends the second round of matches!" the herald announces.  "Up next, the semi-finales!"

Ladonna walks back to the stands as she waits for her next fight. "Well, I'm going to have to be a little extra careful now," she says to Lillian. "My armor has worn off."

"You could use mine, but I doubt that's within the rules," Lillian jokes.

"I can't use actual armor," Ladonna says. "But if you have the armor spell, I don't see why you couldn't use it on me."

"Really?" Lillian says, rather surprised. "Well...ok, then." She touches Ladonna, casting the spell.

"Thanks. I mean, they heal you right after the fight," she explains with a shrug. "I wonder who I face next."

[Daos]

Lillian sings a brief ditty and lays a hand on Ladonna's shoulder, restoring the armor spell on her.

The announcer then returns to the ring.  "Our first match of the semi-finales is Norris Sern versus Kohen Viondre Fuller!  The arcane against the divine, who will win?" she asks.

Norris enters the ring again, looking quite confident and non-nonchalant.  Viondre, her weapon in hand, looks determined as she steps in the ring, as well.

Lillian casts Armor on Ladonna, granting her AC 6 for 13 HP.

"Let me know how the battle goes," Ladonna says. "I need to go buy something really quick," she says. With that said, she hurries to go buy some rope just in case she needs it for the next battle.

"...all right," Lillian says. This particular battle is of little interest to her, but she figures Ladonna could use some information about her future opponent.

Ladonna leaves to look for some rope.  It's not the kind of thing usually sold at festivals, but luckily there are a few supply shops still open today for travelers, and she manages to find one selling rope.  She can get fifty feet of hemp rope for a gold piece or the same amount of silk rope for 10 gold pieces.

Meanwhile, back at the ring, the fight begins.  Norris quickly chants a spell, and suddenly there are five Norris' in the ring, each one moving in perfect unison with the other four.  Viondre swings at one of them, but the Norris' seem to see the attack coming ahead of time, and sidestep away in time.

The Norris' then all swing their staves at Viondre, but she manages to protect herself with her shield.  She swings her mace again, and this time the aasimar connects; but the Norris she hits just vanishes, leaving the others unblemished.

The Norris' swing again, but this time Viondre manages to not only block the staff, but knock it aside.  All four staves clatter at their respective Norris' feet.  Viondre then swings true, and hits the real Norris quite hard.  The false images all vanish, and the real Norris goes down.

"Those with faith in Gonto's plan always prevail!" Viondre cries to the crowd as they cheer.  Healers rush to help Norris get back on his feet.

Ladonna goes the cheap route, and pays for the hemp rope. She thanks the person, then heads back to the fights while putting away the rope. "What did I miss?" Ladonna asks Lillian once she returns.
