Drezden looks the depression over the looks for a long stick to probe the depression with.

As they are in a forest, it isn't too hard for Drezden to find a long stick. As he pokes at the depression, and Dallion walks the perimeter, Krah approaches it. "Yes...I can feel the power in this area. This was once a sacred place," he states, looking around.
"What do you make of these stones?" Taska asks. "Look like they've been here a long time."

Malavar wanders around the depression, idly tapping the stones with his spade. "I am no builder, but a siege engineer I met loved to tell the tale of a mad lord who tried to build a castle in a swamp. Three times, he tried - the first castle sank into the swamp, the second as well. The third one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. However, his fourth attempt was successful, because the other three became a solid foundation on which to build. And here we are in a land of eternal winter..."
"Suppose that when Damien raised his tower, it was on hard, frozen ground. He may not have paid much heed to laying strong foundations, because there was no need. But then the great thaw came, and solid ground became mud. That was what Kinnuki said - the tower sank into the mud, not fell over into the mud. So what if it was somehow swallowed up by the earth? What if we're standing right on top of it?" He pauses to look around the circle of stones. "These stones are all squarish and fairly regular in size - they might be the battlements of the tower..."
"Anyone for a spot of digging?" he says, dangling his shovel in front of Krah.

"I think you might be on to something there," Taska says, noting the near perfect circle the stones make. Krah nods, and accepting the shovel, starts digging in the very center of the circle.
After digging for an hour, he hits what seems to be solid rock. Digging around a bit more, one gets the feeling that this stone is worked not natural, and that something beneath the ring of stones is solid. The others join in to help, and manage to clear away most of the dirt from the middle of the circle and find what appears to be a trap door of some kind. Krah grabs the rusted ring on the trapdoor and heaves, but it snaps right off, sending him sprawling backwards.

Drezden looks the stones over then the trap door with the now broken ring and probes the door with his stick. "Well I guess we need to pry the door open."

"If the door is stuck and none of us happens to have an appropriate spell to open it, brute force is always an option. Stand back," Malavar declares. Hefting his warhammer, he takes a few experimental swings at the trapdoor to see if it can be smashed open.
OOC: He'll swing full force once or twice, then stop to inspect if any damage is being done. If there are signs that the trapdoor is loosening, he'll stop and try to lever it open.
If it seems to be cracking under his swings, he'll keep going, but keep an eye out for any signs that the masonry around the trapdoor is shifting. After all, we're probably standing on the roof of an ancient tower that's been buried under a ton of earth. If the masonry beneath begins to give way, the entire roof could collapse, taking us with it or at least filling the tower with enough earth that we can't get inside.

While Dallion looks over the stones, Drezden pokes at the door with his stick, but to no avail. Gesturing for the others to move back, Malavar draws his hammer and strikes the door. It cracks slightly. He then hits it a second time, and the crack grows. It may take another one or two hits before it breaks entirely, though. ============= Malavar strikes the trapdoor with his warhammer, dealing (1d4+5): 1+5 = 6 damage. The trapdoor becomes moderately damaged.

Malavar nods in reply and winds up for another swing.
OOC: May as well roll the dice myself. Two swings, but obviously he'll stop if one is enough to break through.

Drezden "Alright let me give ya a hand there Malavar." he dwarf takes up one of his hand axes and gives a swing to the door if Malavar is not in the way.

On the very next hit, Malavar breaks open the trap door. Unfortunately, the entire area around it up to 10 feet also collapses, as well. Malavar and Drezden both fall about 10 feet before hitting the ground roughly. Fortunately, they don't fall too far and don't get too banged up in the process.
"Hey, you two okay!" Taska calls out, not wanting to approach for fear the rest of the ceiling might cave in, as well.

Drezden gets back up holding his back "Oof! Well that's what I get for helping. Could have been worse I suppose. You alright Malavar?" the dwarf offers a hand to help Malavar back onto his feet.

Malavar graps Drezden's outstretched hand and pulls himself back up on his feet. "I'm alright, friend. Mostly bruises to my pride," he answers with a shrug.
"We're alright!" he calls back up to Taska. "There's rope in my pack. Tie it to a tree and toss the other end down here. That should help us get back out or the rest of you get down here without any unnecessary cuts and bruises."
Having said his piece, he pauses to take stock of his surroundings.

The first thing Malavar and Drezden notice is that they are covered in cobwebs now. Apparently they fell through quite a few of them on their way down, and are now coated in a thin, sticky film of the stuff. All around them hangs thick webs, and the smells of stale air, damp earth, and ancient dust assault their noses.
It's completely dark down here, save what little light is coming from the hole above, but both have infravision so this is of no concern to them. The room is circular and seems about 25 feet in diameter, with what resembles a large iron cauldron resting in the middle of the floor. A heavy layer of dust covers all surfaces, including the remains of what could have been an ornate chair five feet to the north of the cauldron. There's some kind of circular design drawn on the floor itself that encircles the cauldron, but dust obscures most of it.
Taska secures the rope and tosses it down the hole. "Are you coming out, or are the rest of us coming down?" she asks.
