"Chevis? That bum? It's something of a wonder he hasn't died yet. If he lives through the winter, I'll eat my apron," he says.
"I don't know if I could hire you. I admit, I do need a new assistant. My last one...left awhile back. But if you have no skills, it means I would have to train you from scratch. That would take time."

"Well, maybe you could take me in?" Sonoma asks hesitantly. "It is just that you are really the only one that has been nice to me since I got here. Everyone else has just sort of tolerated me, and now Chevis is making me get my own food because he says he can't afford to feed me. He says I can feed myself since I am making five coppers a day, but I need other stuff too," she says all in one breath. "Plus, he wants me to start cleaning up after him too, saying that I need to earn my keep."

Largo seems taken back. "Oh, uh...with me? Well, I do have a spare room, but...I don't know, we just met five minutes ago, and you've gone from asking to buy boots, to a job, to living with me...I wasn't expecting all of this," he says.

"Well, if I actually live with you, then it won't take too much time out of your job to train me...right?" Sonoma asks.

Largo hesitates. "Listen, working with leather is a specialized job. It takes years of skill to become a master, and even the basics will take time to learn. This isn't something you can learn in a few days or even weeks. If you want to be my apprentice, you'd have to be dedicated to it. This is no flight of fancy, and simply changing your mind later isn't a good option."
"That being said, are you sure this is what you want?" he asks, his eyes locked to hers, as if attempting to gleam the truth from her expression alone.

Sonoma takes on a more thoughtful expression as she considers what Largo just said. How bad could working leather really be? It didn't seem like a bad thing all around, and the smell of leather wasn't all that bad.
"Okay, I can agree to that," she finally says, looking up to him. "I don't have any plans to just up and leave, so I think I can dedicate myself to something like this," she says with a small smile.

Largo scratches at his scruffy beard for a moment. Finally, he nods in consent. "All right. I'll take you on as my apprentice. I hope you like the smell of leather, because it takes awhile to get used to."

Sonoma was so happy, she had to stop herself from flinging herself over the counter to hug Largos. Instead, she just smiled to him brightly. "Thank you!" she said excitedly. "And I know I can get use to the smell. It is kind of strong right now, but it isn't too bad," she added. "I should probably go tell Chevis though, not that he is going to worry about it too much. At least I'll be able to return his stinky old boots."

"Those belong to Chevis? Ugh, I though they looked familiar," Largo says, eying the unattractive boots warily.
He sighs. "I hope I don't come to regret this. Anyway, go collect your things then, and return here when you are ready. You can get settled in today, but first thing tomorrow, we begin training."

"Great. I'll be back in a little bit then," Sonoma said cheerfully. She gave the food one last look before hopping off the stool and nearly running out of the leather shop. For the first time since she had arrived in Buho, she was happy. She could only hope it didn't backfire in her face.
She ran back to Chevis' shack and stepped inside. "Chevis?"

Although by now it was around thirteen bells, Chevis was apparently just now getting up to start his day. His hair mussed, he steps out of his room, stretching and yawning.

Sonoma took off Chevis' boots and placed them on the floor. "I'm not going to need those anymore," she said. "And you won't have to worry about me anymore either because I found somewhere else to stay," she said, figuring it was best just to get it all out there.

Chevis blinks and looks at her with dumb surprise. "Huh? What? With who? Where?" he asks, confounded.

"With the leather guy, Largos," Sonoma said. "He said he had an extra room that he could give me, and he is going to train me to be his assistant," she explained. "So I won't even have to work in the stables anymore."

"Largo? Largo Underborough?" Chevis asks incredulously. "Huh. He does seem to have a thing for tribals." The fisherman shrugs. "Well, that's good news for me, then. When are you leaving?"
